Water quality, diet, and tank size....Bigger the better...Best example is the Oscars....Ever seen an Oscar growout in a well filtered 30-40g????In MOST cases, the Oscar still showed stunt growth....Even with a varied diet and water changes every week.....

40g...PetSmart 2inch growout...My buddy's O grew to only 6 inches with a crooked back....That fish survived for seven years in that condition before being traded back in....Today, that same owner has been educated well enough(by me)...Now has a thriving Tiger Oscar.....He uses the same filtration that was used on the origanal 40, a Fluval 403(old school number)....Same weekly water changes...Same diet of Hikari pellets and mealworms....Only difference now is the 100g that I hooked him up with....From 2in to 9in in 2 years is average satisfacton....

In conclusion, I believe that tank size does play a big part in the growouts' life....

Ever see one of those really really obese people on TV? The ones that have to be removed by forklift after they knock down a wall of their house? I dont think the size of their house made them fat. I think genetics, psychology and food were a factor.
As for our fish, we feed them pretty regularly, whats the food availability in the wild? Im sure it varies by species and region so I would think tank max size versus wild max size would be species specific.

wow, i think that's the most idiotic logic i've seen used in a long time.

LOL
So youre saying the house did make them fat? That the size of the house or tank doesnt matter nearly as much as other factors is my point.
Now dont hold back and tell me what you really think!

you cant compare fish to people. i cant believe i even had to say that.

Diet, Genes, water quality all play a role. Water quality is directly related to tank size. The smaller the tank the sooner the water gets fouled. You can offset the amount of fouling by doing water changes but the fact is that the fish will spend more time in its own waste when in a smaller volume tank.

There isn't one filter on the planet that processes all waste in a single pass. That would mean that every molecule of waste touches BB during every pass which is impossible. You can babble on about how you have 1 million times turnover but unless the filter is connected directly to the fishes butt and your filter is HI-S, RO/DI with a carbon block then waste is being ingested by your fish with every breath.

ya diet, genes, water quality and size of tank matter. if an animal does not exercise, it cant grow properly and will be stunted. its like in humans, people and animals can alter their appearance by exercise (drastically) although it isnt usually height that grows as much as muscle does height can still be affected, i noticed that when i was 16 (i did nothing and was very lazy) i was not growing very fast, but when i started working out when i was 17 and keeping fit, i grew in height a lot faster. also this last year, i took my cat for 2km walks and a 200m sprint every day during the summer and spring and he has drastically changed shape and has grown a lot and he is full adult at about 7 yrs old. the body is a lot more complex than people think and can be influenced and shaped to adapt to situations. we dont know how everything works, scientists dont even truely know what water is, so in some way or another, fish can be affected by tank size

What scientific evidence would make something grow smaller because it lives in a smaller environment? Nothing.

Also, zdoo, of course you are going to grow when you are SEVENTEEN lol. It was a coincidence that it happened when you started working out. If anything, working out increases testosterone, but a little thing called puberty caused you to grow.
