I am currently looking to get a new dog. I am thinking about going with a Doberman pinscher or German Shepherd.

Opinions?

See if there's some at the shelter and pick what you like. I would prefer the dobie myself, short hair = less shedding mess, and wash and wear fur.

I was planning on going to the shelter this weekend. I am leaning more towards a dobie but my girlfriend wants a German shepherd.

two of my favorite breeds of dog... although personally i would get the doberman...

I had a Sheppard and it was the best dog you could imagine. We would run through the house with me tackling and him biting(playfully) so intensely it sounded like a freight train and when I needed to stop and answer a phone or what not I'd simply say that's enough and he stopped and was 100% calm at the drop of the hat. The same dog that loved rough housing and playing would just stand there while 2 year olds pulled at his lips and ears. That being said I think if I got another Sheppard I'd always be comparing the 2 and the new one would never compare in my mind so after my bassets go I'm probably getting a red dobie.

Dobermann > Rottweiler
Belgian Malinois > German Shepherd

Belgians and dobies are less moody to me and also very playful.

first of all you should decide whether you are buying from a breeder or whether you are adopting.. and the degree of level of experience you have...whether it will be a puppy or older dog.... i like the way you started a thread and your thinking about everything rather then just making an impulsive move..If it is older dog..what do you want and expect from a dog... everyone has there own reasons for owning a dog... and everyone has their own expectations..for instance.. just companion... or loyal watch dog.. will there be kids around..do you have a fenced in yard..do you have time to play and walk.. these are things you should jot down on a piece of paper.. before..... you look at that adorable face... you want a good match to you and your lifestyle...My dobie is all mine... she is loyal to me.. watches over me.. my husband and i have both equally shared her since she was a 10 week old puppy.. yes she likes him.. but he cannot do the things i can do with her... she chose me.. from the time she sat on my lap at the breeders house... my husband held her sibling a bigger pup then mine.. but i got to pick... and from that moment on the bond qrew .. everyone one else is okay.. i am wayyyyyyyyyyy up there... sometimes this can be aggrivating.. since she is totally 100% keen on what i am doing and who i am doing it with.. my husband often remarks.. i have never had nor seen a dog love his owner to this extent.. but this is my dobes.. my male dobie from way back i found at a pound.. he was a male and wandered away from his owner.. that dobie was the best dog i have ever owned... he was polite.. sweet ..comforting and 100% secure within himself.. no fear and didn't have to prove anything.. a real mans dog... so what i am trying to say is ...they're are all different dobies within the breed.... each is an individual.. but one thing i have to say .. they are all super smart... but so is the german shepard.. it just depends on the dog and the person to click.....http://www.dobermantalk.com/forumindex.php learn all about the doberman on this forum.... very good info... also keep in mind if getting a dobie pup.. ears and tail are usually docked unless you prefer the undocked dobie..runs into money.. plus getting dog neutered.. etc.. i don't think shepards are altered in any way as far as ears. and tail. not sure about duclaws..
