Does anyone here fish for gar? How?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One more vote for bowfishing. Have gotten one on a heavy flippin' rig with a floating lizzard though...

This past summer I just used a blue fox spinner. The gar were all schooling up shallow. I would cast out and run the spinner shallow past the gar's nose. Most of the time they went for it. When they grabbed the spinner I would give a lot of slack and then set the hook hard. Of course I would yank the spinner out of their mouth sometimes, but I managed to hook and land quite a few shortnose gar this way.

We caught even more in the minnow seine.

Thanks to everybody. I will try this stuff. I love monster fish.

ok i have and the little b*stards are almost impossible to catch bc idk they grab it but once they get close to the shore they just let go... like my friend has caught one bc the stupid fish diditn let go until it was on land..... ishould have kept him....... :( if only a big enough tank

Are they really hard to hook?

Oh yeah I did see a picture of a monster Alligator Gar that was caught in the mississippi..........duh.........

I guess I've just never caught one or heard of anyone catching one so I assume there wasn't any in MN.

Yep, they are there. I believe they are in the MN river too, 5 min from my house. I am looking for a good spot to fish for them this spring. Anyone know when they spawn?

they spawn in the spring (i think?) anyway around here (louisiana) when they spawn
you can find 100's together in small slow moving creeks all you need is a big net

Thanks for the info, I will go fishing in may.

I never thought of the pantyhose thing, bet it works even better than frazzled nylon rope. Yes, they have very hard mouths.
