I should mention, also, that all of mine died peacefully. Some were slightly hunched backed - but none had tumors. This has me wondering about diet.
What have you guys been feeding yours?

Mine eat fruits and veggies everynight and treats in between that.
They really like bananas and apples.

our ate what most rats ate............everything.

I used to have rats.
I know some people are fanatic about their rats and will spend small fortunes on their geriatic care.
Getting cancer is a drawback with keeping rats. I thought if I only had well bred pet bred rats I wouldn't have to worry about cancer, I was wrong and many of my rats got cancer anyways.

Most socialized rats and well mannered and will never bite. A few bad apples will snap and start biting.
I had one well loved rat raised by me since a pinkie and one day and he snapped and bite me deeply on the hand. I have a small scar from it. From what I've heard this is very rare.
Most biting rats have not been socialized or were abused.

ok both in mice and rats it has been shown that woodchip beddings are more likely to cause tumors in rats and mice its better to go with recycled paper for bedding...the average life span is between two to three years...if your really worried and she isnt doing well humanely put her to sleep if her quality of life is not great.

I got some rats today! But when I have them, they usually don't last too long.

It happens....

Sheesh people, the title clearly says do you have PET rats.

Some people just have a closed mind. They make fantastic pets. (the rats, not the closed minded people)

Yes, I have really enjoyed owning them as pets. I don't really feel she is in any pain, just looks odd. Once it gets to the point that it really affects her, I will put her down in a humane way.
They really DO make AWESOME pets!!
