Does anyone on here own pet rats?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
rats are awesome pets, they just have a bad rep. I liked the pouched rats personally.

well as much as i like them, they aren't something I'd let crawl around on my face :p nah I just meant the general persona of rats... a lot of people don't like them and shudder at the thought of them.

I dont think I'd ever keep a pet rat, but they are sort of interesting. I sort of like hairless rats, funny looking creatures they are, I wouldnt mind having the chance to own one. I prefer hedgehogs and g-pigs as far as pocket/mini pets go though. :)

From my experience with rats, I definitely can appreciate their personalities, intelligence, etc.

I used to work at a pet store and every now and we had our very own "rat lady," who kept pet rats and would have at least one with her at all times (like, when running errands) and would buy food at that store.

You could always count on seeing at least one turd on her shoulder, and I couldn't imagine the smell of a huge colony of rats in someone's living room.

A for effort but F for cleanliness...not for me. My snakes love them though!

Might want to look into sugar gliders...they can be cool if you have the time for them.

But, like many rats, sugar gliders will pee and poop on your shirt, furniture, etc though without a second thought.

My rats have never pooped or peed on me when I have kept them on my shoulder for hours at a time. I really do like my rats and will miss them when they go.

I would love to have a sugar glider, but don't have time for them right now.

IME: i've had 3 rats, all female...2 had the same tumers your rat has...all the vets in my area considered my rats "exotic pets" and wouldnt take them :( ...the only one that would ,tried to charge me $300 per rat with no guarentee (they never worked on rats before) so i didnt chance it...they lived for 4 years with that ugly golfball thing stuck on them...it never slowed them down at all, climbing/eating/playing etc. .....very strong loving animals ;)

Thanks for the info. She is still a very active rat. She still eats, plays and does all her normal activity. I know that the vets around here will charge me an arm and a leg because they have never worked on them either and do consider them "exotic".
