Does bio media break down

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They do get clogged up with detritus, but I have yet to see ceramic media break down to the point where it isn't usable. Just make sure you rinse it in tank water whenever you clean or change your mechanical media.

How strange. Bad batch of rings? I got some crappy ceramic stuff made for a cascade filter but I have not seen this yet its almost 4 years old now.

Hmmmm...
I'm officialy at a loss now-----I have no clue on what could have caused it then.......Just know I couldn't get rid of it for nothing-until I broke the whole tank down and spent over 8 hours cleaning everything

Thanks-
If I decide to re use the media....I'll make sure to due some of the suggestion given in this thread....

I would like to have an answer to this though...But oh well I guess

I think it's more likely that it's some type of protein film on the water that's causing the bubbles. What is your water change schedule? How much do you remove with each change? and how much protien is in your fish's diet?

Water change schedule was done weekly on every sunday-
I do large water changes-Roughly 60 to 80% I feed Raw shrimp-Generally 2 to 3 inch shrimp everyother day----Gets completely eaten-No left overs...

dont matter if it gets all eaten or not cause i'm sure most of it don't get digested that great anyway. fish's digestion systems arent the greatest you know.

i bet the bubbles look like whats inside a protien skimmer.

There are no bubbles present-
It looks like ICh floating on top of the water......But much heavier than Ich would be....
I have a white ceiling---But no results of any kind of damage-So it can't be that flaking off into the tank either......

The only thing that was introduced into this tank that was or has been a white color was nothing more than bio media......

I feed the same diet to all of my fish tanks since seafood is cheap for me to come by......No affects of this in anyother tank I own----Just this one-

i said bubble cause when i searched it it came up on a topic of white bubbles. if you have really big fish with alot of waste with alot of feeding and you keep the tank above 80 and well aireated you have a chance of getting a white film when your bubbles pop at the top. they basically get dirty from protein coming up from the aireator. just like a protein skimmer basically. just that you do the skimming:D.
