Does melafix even work?

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can knock the product all you want, but used according to the directions, melafix does work. And it works better than just adding salt to a tank.

A 16 oz. bottle of Melafix for ponds treats 4,800 gallons of water and costs less than $10. How does that empty your wallet?

because you could get the same results from using clean water. it may help with small things like torn fins or a small scrape to heal faster, but so will clean water. anything more, like fungal infections, rot, etc, get a real medication that also won't have your fish at the surface gasping for air.

That much has become apparent now. in hindsight. but honestly the product is a mess. its oily and makes the water cloudy and dense, and steals all the oxygen. Just because a product says it will do something does not mean it will, a lesson learned lol.

I don't run carbon in my filters. ceramic rings, sponge, and other biomedia. Why, does it matter?

Carbon is known to hinder or remove some medications from the water.

The results will be different for everyone. There are way too many parameters with all of the tanks we have here to see if it actually works or not. Myself, I didn’t see any difference using the recommended dosage or adding a little more. I have used Pima and Mela with no luck. Maybe some folks have and some obviously haven’t including myself. Some folks just "think" they have or are defending it for other reasons. Bacterial and parasitic infections clear up on their own at times , in conjunction with other environmental factors, etc. we just don’t know for sure.

You also have to realize, when you are supposed to use Mela or Pima.. The product claims "mild" bacterial infection, I don’t know what mild means, bacterial infection is bad, while some are worse than others, how do we determine a mild infection? Even the smallest infection can be the most severe. Then it goes to say it can treat in the "early stages". Let’s just say it does work 100% in the early stages, how many of us actually catch bacterial infections in the early stage? I guarantee you it’s not a lot, we all other things to do in life, no matter how much we love our fish.

Do you know how many types of infections are out there? Not everyone knows what all infections they have, could be one, could be multiple.

All fish are not created equal and will not all react the same to the meds.

There are far better medications out there to use then either one of these that can treat, early, mid or long term infections. I wouldn’t want to gamble on these products when I can spend the same amount on another product to cure it.

Proven Scientifically doesn’t mean squat these days, everything is lab proven, scientifically proven just to get you to buy it, it’s a gimmick. How often you see diet pills that say " scientifically proven to make you lose 30lbs in 30lbs ".

Melafix is a HUGE risk for saltwater, many, many stories of people killing their entire stock by using this, but then again that can be said with anything but you hear about it more with Melafix.

I would stick with a better known medication that is much stronger than Mela or Pima.

"...i simply use regular table salt"
Table salts contain trace amounts of non-clumping additives that DON'T show on the label along with Iodine. Look for plain non-iodized Sodium Chloride.
