Does over dosing a tank with Melafix have a negative effect on fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whew.... That was the fastest water change and canister rinsing I have ever done... 40mins....

So now that I am re-cycling the FX5, how often should I do water changes? I currently have two cycled AC 110 on it and I feed my fish everyday with market shrimp.

Ky, 30% daily? Really? Man... that's a lot of work...

Is it worth your fish's lives? I hope they all pull through, Good luck.

how about 20%. slow down on the feeding too for the next couple days.

you are a burniator arn't you

I just scanned the whole thread quickly but if you've got carbon in your filters that will already have dragged most of the meds out.

Melalix is good stuff imo, I fell out with it over discus but swore by it in the past and since have changed meds

I had the same experiance with melafix. I followed the directions and after the 3rd day my haps were breathing very heavily. My water changes were every week 50%. I did a 50% when I saw the heavy breathing then it stopped after the water change immediately. I read on the bottle that this is a naturaul tea extract but I don;'t know. I won't use it anymore. Salt seems to work the best for me.

I have used them before and I didn't have any problems as well (10 gallon hospital tank). I read the directions as well and it said 1 tsp for every 10 gallons. I dosed the 100 gallon tank with 7 capfuls which should be around 10 tsp maybe more (definitely more) thus the title "over dosing the tank with melafix."

This is the first chemical that has come into contact with my tank aside from the plain generic dechlorinator which is $2 in my LFS.

The clincher like the other posts said was the plugging back in of the FX5 with dead bacteria.

It is definitely worth it. If my fish died, I would have probably given up fish keeping for an extended amount of time.

I don't think any fish will die though. They seem much happier after the water change. All are eating fine and swimming. I'm mainly worried about the NTT and NGT who developed "pop eye."

I guess I'll feed them every other day starting tomorrow since I fed them last night.

I know huh? It's all good though. I won't get into a heated argument with anyone. Its just not worth it doing it over the internet.

That's true. I still went ahead and did a 50% water change just to be on the safe side.

The heavy breathing happened immediately after i dosed the tank with Melafix. I immediately got worried 'coz I really can't afford any of my fish to die 'coz that means out of the hobby for me especially if the ST, aro, or pbass dies...

Dont put all your eggs in one basket. And instead of doing a ton of WC's closely monitor your water parameters. If needed do a change 35-50% at a time. I bet your ac110's have a fair amount of bio on them. I hope it all works out. What is the media in your FX5 as of now ?

I guess you are suggesting I buy a test kit... I haven't had one for more than 2 years though... I think I'll just do a water change every 3 days and do every other day feedings.

Thanks man, I hope it works out as well. FX5 is full of ceramic rings and the foam inserts.
