You have your life ahead...keep your options open. Finish school, try university out. Your first year you primarily take a variety of intro classes anyways. There is a general education requirement in most cases, you don't just take classes for your major. If you don't like it, go to work.

I'm graduating college soon, i have a good job outlook currently (geographic information systems). But i don't necessarily see it being what i do for the rest of my life.

Same...I graduate in May, and have several prospective jobs lined up. I will probably pick a job, work it for 3 or 4 years, then bounce to the next one. Its how I roll... :headbang2

There is nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do or be. It is natural for a young man or woman to feel this way. But trust me when I tell you, that if you let those feelings and the lack of motivation decide the rest of your life for you by quiting school and getting any old job, you are making a big mistake. When you are young you have this air of invincibility, the feeling that you can make decisions and change your mind later. Well I am here to tell you that life has a funny way of educating you weather you want to be educated or not. The bad part about letting life educate you rather than school is that it is always too little too late. Or as the saying goes "too soon old; too late smart". Imagine you decide to put off your education and get a job. Next thing you know you get a car (payment) decide to buy a house or get an apartment (mortgage/rent), you meet a great girl and fall in love and 9 months later the twins arrive. You finally decide that your jobs not cuting it and you r just "not motivated" and you should go back to school and get a better job to provide for your family. night school is tuff, especially when you have to work all day to pay the mortgage, 2 car payments, groceries, utilities, etc, etc. You have to drop out of night school cause its just tom much and you can't get the homework done with the kids running around the house screaming thier heads off all night. Now you've past forty and the economy is being systematically flushed right down the toilet by our leaders and you are being laid off of work and jobs are few and far between. Hmmmmm maybe I should've stuck it out and finished school and spent 4 - 6 years of my life getting educated. 2 years, 4 years, 6 years may seem like a long long time being wasted away when your young and in school, but when your older it is but just a drop in the bucket of life. You will wish and pray, burn incensce and send sacrifices to the gods if you could to get those years back. Trust me, I'm living the dream, or should I call it the nightmare. Don't misunderstand I love my wife and I love my children even more, but life sure would be a whole lot less stressful for us all if I ahd made the right choices when I was a younger man. Your momo knows this and that is why she is on your a**. And I am fairly certain that she brings your older brothers grades, etc too you to motivate you and get your competitive juices flowing - get you motivated.
Stay in school, go to college, you will have the time of your life and you will have many more contacts and propects for employment as a result. The actual "grades" are secondary, JUST DO IT!

The deal you made with your mom about the bass sounds good. Now for reality check. If you don't finish school you'll wind up having to hock your bass while you look for work (manual labor and factory) and hope to get by. You'll regret not finishing your whole life. However as Princess said uni is fun. A LOT of fun. AND, you can use your bass to get attention at parties and such. Your fun at uni will be 10x the fun you have if you don't go and then when you get out, you get paid MORE for doing LESS>..

...I've done both routes. I had TOO much fun at uni and dropped out. I then went a decade working myself to death for nothing (monetarily anyway). I am now back at uni and should finish up in about 24 months. ALSO More $ = more aquariums and places to put them. Finish school mate.

Yeah its cool if you dont know what you want to do with your life. You are among the many.

Im in my second semester of college and im really unmotivated because right now I am only taking the basic gened courses that I need to take. The only motivation I have is to just put up with it until the Fall when I start working on my major courses and do something I would enjoy. I would definitely say that the work world is not all cut out as its cracked up to be. With a degree its more stable, at least in most cases.

I say just do what you want but if you think itll be better to do one thing over the other then do so.

Get a goal or a dream 1st!!! Something that excites you and motivates you! Then strive for it! Everything will fall into place after that!
School is not for everyone, nor is getting a good "job". There are a lot of very successful people who did not go to "uni" and instead followed their dream and are extremely successful!!

I'm not all too sure how it works in Australia, but I do know that in the US, without a high school diploma, it's hard to get any job. Some people truly have trouble in school and just don't have the intellectual capacity to finish high school, however you don't seem to have that problem....anyone smart enough to be a Monster Fish Keeper must be pretty damn smart.

The bass guitar isn't a bad idea, but what happens when that motivation goes away? What happens when you get to the point where you decide you don't really need the bass guitar that bad anyways? Then you stop caring about the grades and we're back at square one. I personally think that if you were threatened with punishment you'd be much more motivated. It's a fast way to learn there are consequences for your actions. Right now, there don't seem to be many consequences for dropping out of school, but I promise you there will be in the future.

Not knowing what you want to do isn't uncommon. I'm 23, working on a Master's Degree in the field of biology, but I'm still not sure what I want to do when I'm done. However, with the state of the US economy, school isn't ever a bad option. I'll probably end up getting my PhD because I know that I can at least get a job as a Full Professor at a university, until I figure out exactly what it is I want to do. With all this being said, an education was what I wanted to do, I knew from an early age that college and advanced degrees were in my future. There isn't a damn thing wrong with not wanting to go to college and picking up a trade or doing blue collar work. All my uncles and family members do this type of work and many of them now make good money, but they're into their late forties and they physically can't do the work like they used to.

I think you should just bear down and finish out the next two years to the best of your ability. If blue collar work is what you want to do, it will still be there in two years when you graduate. But 40 years down the road, you won't have the chance to be 16 again and finish high school. Either way, I wish you the best of luck and I hope you figure everything out, but you're young, you don't need to know what you want to do with the rest of your life tomorrow, don't wish your life away, you'll be old before you know it.

"Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't." - Mary Schmich, Chicago Tribune

Without an education, you will be nothing. You can learn, or learn how to make sandwiches. Remember that the choices you make now will affect you for the rest of your life.

The thing about blue collar work is you have to truely enjoy it. That is what you ae going to be doing all the time. You are going to sweat in the summer and freeze in the winter. You are going to get cuts and scratches, you are going to get banged up. You are going to get dirty. It's hard work. If you don't truely like hard work, you are going to be miserable. It's almost a passion, you can't explain it, thats just the way it is.

As for me, I knew what I wanted to do with my life when I was 10. At 13(freshman year), I started tech school. Now, I know that everyone says that tech school is for losers that don't want to go to real high school. That is true in many cases, I went to school with a lot of morons. If you are there to learn, though, it can be an invaluable tool for the future. So, i went there, got a job in the field when I graduated, and have been doing it ever since. I've never set foot in a college. I'm now 27 and make around 60g a year. It's not crazy money, but I ENJOY going to work and it is enough to be comfortable. Think about it. I see my coworkers more than I see my wife. It is important that you enjoy your job. If someone were to offer me twice the money to work at a desk, I would walk away laughing. It's just not me. Some people get too caught up in the money and end up leading unhappy lives. Also, in these hard economical times, I know that with the skills I have, I am going to stay employed. I have friends that put in 4 years of college and now work part time at starbucks. I still have people asking me to quit my job and come work for them. Maybe I am an exception to the rule, I don't know.

You are right, you need to make these decisions now. If you pick the blue collar route, what are you interested in? I mean, anyone can grab a shovel and go to work. What do you like to do? If you go the white collar route, will you be happy? Or are you going to be watching the clock, counting the minutes, for the rest of your life? If you wait much longer, you will find yourself 35 and working at moobys.

Basicly, what I am getting at is do what you like. If you like a climate controlled environment and a comfy office chair, then get a desk job. If you like using your hands, then grab a shovel.:)

well, I do love using my hands. I've thought about carpentry. I do like working with timber rather then metal. I have had this thought, maybe I could make guitars for people, earn my money off that. but I need to look at some facts first. 1. I've never made a guitar. 2. the market for custom guitars

so I'm thinking maybe I will make some guitars, with my father, over this year, see how that works.

sorry man, but youre just young and ignorant right now. try to think about the long term. how will the decisions you make right now affect your life 5, 10, 15yrs down the road? mummy and daddy wont always be around to bail you out.

get your head out of your ass and start thinking like an adult. work hard now, enjoy the benefits later

Man, I'm unsure what I want to do with my life. I'm not perfect. Yes I'm young and Ignorant, and part of the reason I made this thread is because I need to think about my long term. mummy and daddy have never bailed me out of anything... ANYTHING, and they never will. Now I've seen these points, I realise, this bass guitar thing is not motivation. Wise old jcardona, tell me wtf i will benefit from going to school for two more years if I don't know wtf I'm going to do with my life. My head is out of my ass, and I'm acting like an adult, perhaps you haven't realised, or read correctly. I'm all ears man, tell me. I'm not sure you were perfect in your 10th year of schooling so stop acting like I should be....
