Dogs have nothing to do with babies.Period. Let them sniff them, get familiar with their smell but do not go beyond that.
People tend to "humanize" dogs and involve them in "family life" and that is where the **** may hit the fan.
Dogs are pack animals and will always try to rise within the pack they belong to. In modern society, said pack is the family.
And dogs do not recognize small humans as cuddly babies. They simply are another member of the pack who happens not to be the alpha element of the pack. Dogs are, therefore, prone to try climb the pack ladder starting with the small kids.

And they may bite the kids. For the above reason, for the reason that kids do not know how to deal with a dog, looking them straight in the eyes and assuming dog like postures. Never let a kid be on the same level with a dog, never let a kid play on its knees with a dog. If a kid needs to be with dogs ( as mine do, everyday ) let them do it standing up, being on a higher level than the dog.

I love dogs, I have seven huge dogs ( all over 60 kilos ) and I have six kids. But let me tell you, the dogs are outside, and the older kids know how to deal with them. My baby 2 year old girl won't even go near them without a very attentive adult nearby, solely focused on what is happening.

And what I am saying is even more so with small "family "breeds, because those breeds are the ones that people tend to be careless with. Hospitals are full of cocker spaniel and labrador bitten kids.

100% aggree. ;)

My friend's neighbor's friendly dog tore off half of his baby cousin's face.

IMO, you kid, your rules. If it were your dog, fine. Not yours? Well, it has no place anywhere near a child that young. Miguel is 100% right. Dogs aren't people. They are dogs. We just happen to get along well together most of the time. Don't give in to emotional and exasperated rantings. Your child's health and security are far more important than a relative's hurt feelings.

my feelings exactly. Nice to know how many people actually do aggree with me. :)

i went to my friend's house who live in Ocean Beach in SD. There's a grassy area outside their gate that leads to "dog beach" where people take their dogs to be off the leash.

But lots of people let their dogs off leash on this grassy area which has clear signs saying "dogs not aloud on grass" "dogs must be leashed"

This weekend my friend's niece was crawling on the grass (1 yr old) and a dog (off its leash) when running and barking after her. I yelled at the top of my lungs at this dog and it stopped short of her.
But i just about murdered it's owner. How do you get off walking your dog with no leash around little children? Especially if its going to act like that?

You arent cool! We dont care about your stupid dog. Put it on a leash. And get away from the kids.

sounds like you've made up your mind ;)

at first i understand youre reaction and you have reacted well,i shoud have done the same.
but i you have like ik do to,you thinks else in such a situation, your mother probably sees your respond like an attack about the dog.
i actually now my dog isnt solid for a 100%.
but how shoud you react when someone wil said to you that you small kid can't walk in a zoo beceause he maybe hurts animals?
nowing your kid will never do something like that, you wil be angry to.
