I have always used the old Marineland Stealth heaters in my tanks. In the last 6 months, I had to replace 3 of them within 1 yr of buying because they were overheating my tanks. Two from 80 to 86, and another from 80 to 89. Luckily, I keep 2 different thermometers on each tank so I check them every time I feed my fish. I have not lost any.
I read through the exploded heater posts online and went into panic mode. When I returned the heaters to Marineland, I cringed because they could only replace them with the Stealth Pros. I looked all over online trying to find a dealer that sold brand new (old) Stealths but couldn't any. So I let Marineland replace them. After reading this thread, I'm back in panic mode. So far so good, but I still want to replace all of them and maybe do the Ebo Jagers.
I marked all my tanks for 20% water removal so my heaters are all under the water line after changes. Luckily I did this because I never think about the heaters during water changes. I even remember one time feeling electrical currents in one of my tanks, but I ignored it. I had an old Stealth heater in the tank at the time. Fish were fine, but I do remember having a bad skin irritation later on after changing the water.
Fishkeeping is rewarding but now expensive when we have to replace products that don't live up to the manufacturer's promises and our expections. But my peace of mind is worth it and my babies are too. Ebo Jagers all the way!
