Luckily none of this has happened to me yet. I fill my 400 through the sump, so I have to monitor it turning the pump on and off while it fills. Worst thing that has happened so far is that I overfilled the sump just a touch and the bioballs started floating. OMG 
Mine was when I did a water change and filled up my tank as you did @2am in the morning or so. Just got back from the club. I passed out while doing the water change and woke up to most of my fish swimming on their side.

Sounds like too much work. Why not just add water to the main tank and have it over flow to your sump?(prime first, no problems)Luckily none of this has happened to me yet. Behind my 450g tank I have a tank room. I have 2 55 gallon tank in the room. I have it setup to drain water just with the turn of the shutoff valve and I can fill it up from a pump in my water storage with the flip of a switch. One day I was doing water changes in my 55's and was filling one of them up. I left the room to do something and completely forgot that the water was still on. About 2 hours later by wife is yelling for me because water is all over the floor. The Entire 100 gallons of water from the storage tank for water changes was all over the floor. It all ran over the edge of the tank. Needless to say the water in that tank was cristal clear. Luckly I was in the middle of construction in the room so it didn't really hurt anything. But I don't even want to think about what would have happened if I was finish with construction and the carpet was down.
Haha thats rough but for some reason when ive been drnking or partying i always get motivated to do something in the tank!!
My worst=doing a water change blazed and completing forgetting a heater excisted and it blew up, all 300watts and all, thank fuc* i was cycling the tank and was just about to put my 6 piranhas in it!!

me i was outa my mind i was doing a wc and the syphon was not in da bucket ,, im ther suckin away and watchin the bucket still suckin watchen the bucket, tanks getin kinda lo im like :WTF: oh ya im lookin at the tank bout 25% water out then look in da bucket only few liters in it thinkin must be a good bucket,
