Dorado do enjoy swimming space, but like KNH said, they are VERY aware of their surroundings. 12' would be great, but I wouldn't call it necessary. They aren't skiddish or darty, takes a lot to spook them. I have one I'm guessing to be around 14" in a 6x2x2 and he's just fine, never touches the glass.....

Really, thats good to know so an 8x4 could sustain these golden monsters!! :)

I know a guy that has a couple ATF, a few armatus and a dorado. The dorado is by FAR the most outgoing. Begs as soon as you walk in the room and will feed from the owners hand.

The dorado is constantly on the move, yet as previously stated, never touches the glass. The dorado is a very cool fish and pretty cool looking. No, it doesnt have impressive teeth but it will shred a fish half his size just like a piranha!

Anyone remember Angeladay's Dorado? Want to say that thing was grown to almost 20" in a 300 without any issues. Not sure how old the fish was.

For what it's worth- Mine always seem to grow crazy fast till about 10-12" then painfully slow. The Franky (Franciscanus) I have is a few years old and I'm not sure he's 15" yet. My Brassy (Brasiliensis) grew much faster then the Frankie did, also seems more tolerant of tank mates.......

So all you dorado keepers tell me, how would one or two fair in a large cichlid community setup? I'd love one or two in my 1400 gallon setup but haven't dared knowing what they are capable of.

Only one way to find out. I'd be concerned if the cichlids have territories as that may end badly when the dorado cruises through it but from what I remember of your tank it's pretty open. I currently have a jumbo blood parrot with mine lol.

Ya and I know that there is only one way to truely know I was just hoping to gather any info I could from people who have kept them in community setups.

Did you enjoy your Wolf?
No!Sat all day and only moved when it was feeding time.
Couldn't go with any other fish even when it was 6" as it was killing fish twice it's size so I had to keep it in a 150 gallon grow out tank. I couldn't put it in my big tanks as that's where I house all my rays and ray tankmates. I realized when he reached 18" there was no way I could house it anymore so it was time to sell.
Every once in a while the aimara would go nuts in the tank and totally rearrange the gravel. After it looked as though he was in a battle so I knew time was running out as the small tank was stressing him out. The price of the aimara kept getting lower and lower over a 4 month period. Nobody was interested in buying him and I even went below $600. Eventually the aimara did his last spaz in the tank and succumbed to the stress. I just walked in on him when he finished ripping the tank apart and the dust hadn't even settled and he was just sitting there like usual but breathing very heavy. Died a couple hours later from apparent cabin fever or whatever you call it for a cooped up fish. So the only way I see an aimara working is in a big big tank as mine grew fast to 18" and if he was in a big tank 3' would have been easily obtained by him.

No offense to any one but For that money I could definitly find something I would like much better.
