I'd try an Aro. If I remember correctly a while back there was a monster Dorado (2ft) out in the Chicago area that was housed with a large Aro. Think the handle was Angeladay. Not sure if it was black or silver but I do remember that combo was working....... My Aro/Dorado combo seemed to work OK but the silver passed from illness.

You might be able to section off an area of the 300 with dividers and etxend them out as the fish grow. Might look ugly for a while, but it's cheaper than buying another tank. Just a thought.
You said the 300 is a growout. How big is the next tank? Any active apex pred is gonna need a bigger tank then 300 for a healthy life. Besides you can't keep most rays in a 300 for life and what's the point of even having a fish tank without rays in a ray legal state?
IF you don't wanna upgrede just do mini monsters- Cynopotomus, Tats, Rhaphs, Cuda, and Odoe. Then of course some smaller rays (True Hystrix, Scobina, P14). That tank is gonna be every bit or even more impressive then a single apex pred with a tank to itself.
It's too bad Aimara still cost an arm and a leg..... I've always wanted one, but won't be able to justify that kinda loot on a non ray fish.

haha you are the ray man for sure DB, I think your right because If a dorado freaks out at 20'' in a 300gal I doubt the tank will support him so cudas and african pikes it is , to me its hard to find tats and raphs . John from the other site can get you Tats. G should be able to as well. Rhaphs are pretty available as well, just have to pay shipping on these fish... Cynos might be tought to track down but definetly worth it, G's the go-to guy there too.
If you feel like spicing it up a bit some Brycon could make things real intresting, maybe some lemon finned barbs as dithers, also some Pink Tailed Chelceus.... There's a lot of neat mini monster Characins out there....
