The ones I have keept started to get ultra aggressive once they hit 12++, my larger Dovi slowly took over a whole tank (at 3"-12" didnt bother anyone), & keept everything else in the tank in a corner (had to give him away). The male Umbes seems to be so aggressive towards a female where as he will kill her if she cant find a hiding place that he cant get into, where my Dovi paired off and stayed together. Never showing hostility towards each other.

Dovi's once paired develop a very tight bond

I have had both and I will warn you they require a lot of maintenance and expense.
Large tank, clean water and live food.
It gets old going by the LFS every other day in order to provide a variety of food. I also maintained a worm farm and tanks to breed feeder fish. Oh the nightmare of raising brine shrimp for the fry.

feed them dry food, I have had my dovi for 2 years, no live, no going to the pet store, nada

It does depend on a lot of factors including the individual fish's personality, tankmates (if you dare), sourroundings. My old umbee was the meanest
