a dovii isn't a practical fish for a starter.
you should know a 20"+ dovii will never fit in a 4'x2'x16" which is by my estimate a 75 gallon tank which large_cichlids wants to put a dovii in.
females need maybe 100 gallons of space.

male dovii get much larger than 16" which is the width of a 75 gallon tank.

you'd need atleast, the bare minimum of a 2' wide tank and if you wanted to grant swimming space, maybe 6-8' for a 20" monster.

180 gallon plus is ideal for a monster dovii.

While I agree with your statement... I just can't help but feel bad for the fish that is 1/4-1/3 the length of the tank and almost the same width.

the only reason I ever bought my Dovii Is because I knew I could house him after he gets a bit big for his 125. I have a 9x3x2 for him and this makes me feel confidant in the fact that he will have much more ample room to move and stretch. In my opinion a Dovii shouldn't be kept in a 6 foot tank. Anything over 12-14" shouldn't be kept in a 6 ft. As for a 20" Dovii that deserves every bit of a 9 foot + tank.

I say if you want the Dovii then get the Dovii. He will be ok in a 75 for a good year. Save a bit of money and get a bigger tank on Craigslist. You can eventually buy a 180 used glass tank for a couple of hundred. You can make your own stand or use cinder blocks. Even if the fish was 12"+ it would still be better than the alternative in its home country, where he would be on a barbque grill! I think, as with anything in life, you can be positive and or negative about everything. As long as you realise that you will need to start looking for a bigger tank in the next year or so then its all good. Jeff Rapps has some nice smaller Dovii. GL to you.

i have to disagree with alot said about space yes the dovii will need a very large tank when full grown but they dont need the same size tank as a baby as they need when they are grown to reach full size. i worked at the washington dc animal shelter and got to talk to the people at the washington zoo they have huge dovii that they grow them out in stages and work them up in smaller tanks before they get to the big tanks. they had 2 huge males in a amazon exzibit with full grown arapima.

But they had the larger tanks already waiting and ready and I think that's the point people are trying to get across.

It doesn't matter if we tell you that the dovii will grow horns, throw up blood all over your living room and breed with your dog you are still going to get your dovii, put it in a 75 and spam the hell out of the forum asking how much filtration you need for a 2" dovii in a 75.:screwy:

Now you're making me feel bad that I got a Dovii. :(

lol funny guyyy

Hmmmm. 9 feet. Well then. What about a diagonal length? Just wondering because I have been contemplating getting my Dovii a 6'x3'x25" tank and I figured that was lots of space..... Guess the diagonal length wouldn't be much more than 6 feet. Maybe Ill build him a pond outta my room and live in my closet haha

PERSONALLY, I don't think Dovii's should be kept in anything under 300 gallons to see the true beast as we know it. In the wild they have large territories, and in a 180 gallon tank, it just won't do them justice. I wouldn't mind building my Dovii a 500 gallon pond or bigger when he starts getting some size on himself.
