Drawer Wet/Dry Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I cut the bottoms out of all three drawers so I could taylor them as I needed.

The mechanical media drawer got the drip tray and basket.
The two lower bio-media drawers both got egg crate bottoms.

To allow water flow under the drawer system, I needed to raise it up off the bottom of the storage bin. I used the grooves on the sides to my advantage and added some pvc pipe. It is barely visible after it is put together.

The DIY bulkhead fittings are made out of pvc electrical conduit (gray fittings). The reason for using the conduit fittings is they have straight threads and can be screwed down all the way. Pipe fittings have tapered threads and can't be screwed down all the way (without two wrenches and some cussing).

Here's how to make the parts:

The female fitting remains unchanged, but the male fitting is cut at the base of the "nut" portion. Use a scrap of pipe to hold the fitting while cutting it.

Ummm... not finished. That pic doesn't have media in it or the pump.

Here it is as of now.

It has been in operation for 4-5 weeks. I've been checking the top drawer to see how long I can go between media changes.

...it looks like 4-5 weeks. :D

By the way, the media tray is lined with quilt batting and then filled with Poly-Fil.

The bio-media is Bio-Bail (from the old filter).

Cheap. Effective. Love it!

How much gph you got going through that?

The only thing i would question is the size of the wholes you drilled on the top tray. They seemed small, as if they would constrict flow.

One last question, $?
