Dreaded Death Curl.. Please Help!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would do 25% water changes daily and add some carbon to the tank to remove anything that may have affected the ray get the temp up to 86 add lots of airation

i never add salt and have never had any problems with melafix but i wouldnt add anything to the tank right now

i have always thought that death curl was caused by brain damage were the ray loses control of the mussels that control the the disk edge
the brain damage is normaly caused by long exposia to bad water conditions

if it helps i recently had a similar problem with my ray . he had his disk edge not quite the same as your pics but similar . the back edges were straight up at times. the front and sides at other times. he was swimming and bumping into stuff and eratic sudden bursts of fast swimming at others. i put this down mainly to large water changes too often .

when i say the problem first thing i did was change water . . . making it worse . problem was no better so kept changing water. i was doing 40% plus every other day with dechlor

after receiving helpfull info from other keepers . i left the tank with no water changes and no chemicals or anything, i added some carbon as a just in case measure and was feeding as normal twice a day . the ray is now happy and eating well .

i am now dong 30% once a week with no dechlor carbon is out of the tank and ray is fine and eating well .

i dont know if your problem is the same as mine but the info is there if it helps .

good to know it is better ;)

he has been out of his curl for a while now, but the challenge is still packing weight on this guy to save him.. def saw the the poo go thru the normal stages of passing parasites, dont know how it got thru Q.. anyway been slamming him with nightcrawlers, hikari pellets, and SS's.. he came out of this curling episode with a dent that is hard to look at, poor lil guy.. he is eating well tho.. how far can I push it before I am overfeeding? keeping tank superb as possible, scoop more stingray poo than pitbull poo around my house lately..

Just keep feeding as much food as it will eat 4 times a day, And stay on top of your water changes. No such thing as over feeding a ray

true you cant over feed a ray mine stop looking for food when they have had enought then start hunting when they are hungry again

I have to say you guessed it right.. I did not want to do any bad publicity, but hey, the ray came where he came from right.. no denying that..

I have bought from aquascape and recieved a nice ray. BUT I DO NOT THINK THAT RAY SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHIPPED IN THAT CONDITION. WAY TOO SKINNY. :irked:

How is he doing now? How long have you had him before you had the dreaded curl?
