Recently decided to go with a bare tank rather than one wit a huge dw piece that covers a good portion of my tank. You guys be the judge and tell me which one you like better. My fishes are getting bigger so I thought the extra space will be good until they need an upgrade. Second, these guys were little cowards always hiding under the dw but now in the open they are really active and approach me whenever I come near their tank. I honestly prefer an open and active piranhas than those that hide all day. What do you guys prefer? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

This video shows the tank previously set.

Its your tank brother ! do what you want ! lol. I usually just do what makes the fish happy... If they like chillin in the wood. Keep it in there.

I like the wood in there. Plus it gives the fish a sense of security. As was said though your tank do as you please.

I like how active they are, but I dont like how the tank almost feels empty. I think if the plants grow up alot more, fill in and maybe grow to 1/2-2/3 to the surface, the tank would look really sweet! Gotta do what makes you happy though! Nice fish

It looks like your fish are quite a bit bigger now than they were in the video with the driftwood. I like the current look and it definitely gives them more space.

I will do whatever makes my fish happy. I will do as much as I can imitate their home in the wild. This in turn will lead to better health and better growth rates. If you say that the driftwood is taking much space for growth then you may need to upgrade already but who can say that? You did not specify the stock and the tank dimensions.

Decor is nice but bare is best for space and water flow for filtration.

You really have some pros and cons.

1) many fish need cover and some need driftwood or certain substrates and without it stress is increased
2) some fish need territories and an undecorated tanks all but makes that impossible and increases stress
3) bare tanks are easier for filtration / water flow and thus can reduce stress related to water quality, but there should be ways to solve that without removing decor
4) breeding is severely limited without some type of decor or the proper decor
5) some decor creates / solves unique issues related to water quality and color (e.g., pH, hardness) which are desirable
6) some owners care about decor / some don't

1) and sometimes 2) typically trump all if you keep certain species.

Also, just a side note, I think that some species hiding habits change with age /size. As they get older they stay out more.

My personal preference is for decor, although I like to have it simple but appropriate for the species involved. I like rocks, sand, driftwood, but all the same type with some open bare spots. I don't want any single piece to dominate the tank either. I'm going to try to add plants to my next one.
