thank you! i still dont quite get it because the exit it lower than the water line in the tank i would imagine that it would siphon all the water out but then again if water cant get in the hole then how can the water get out? lol

thank you so much for the vid, even if i dont completely get it the proof is in the pudding. cant wait to set this up

That is something that confused me also but there is a space for water to sit under the tee of the output and water cant drain past that point leaving water in the pipe 100% of the time keeping the siphon at all times. The water can only overflow out of the drain at the level the drain is at cause the drain isnt connected down to the bottom of the pvc. Good luck if you set this up and ill try and answer any questions

*** a word of caution using this overflow again. My 55 gallon is on air driven sponges and the dilsolved O2 levels cause a bubble in the overflow line that requires me to keep re-priming or it will break syphon. ***

+1 havent experienced a broken siphon yet but have had some bubbles. so its something that must be watched. trying a few things to eliminate bubbles and only time will tell if they work

does the diammeter of the 'siphone' pipe affects in something been smaller or bigger?

IME the larger the pipe the more air build up. That is up for debate though. I've never ran more than 1 GPH through a 1/4" ID line though.

ive been running 3/8" tubing in my overflows and on my 240/150 im running 2 gph and haent had a bubble buildup since i set it up and my other ones are only running .5 gph and had buildup originally but i drilled an extra hole in the other overflows like i did on the 240/150 and havent had a bubble in over 24 hours and one tank is driven by a sponge filter. so maybe two holes helps with the dissolved 02 but couldnt tell you for sure

Thank you for the clarification on how the overflow works. An thanks to Egon on that tip on the extra hole. I just finished with making this design with 3/8" tubing. But on my set up, I'm sorta lost on how my excess water in my sump will be drained. My predicament is that my sump sits on the floor and the closest item to my sump for drainage would be my bathroom sink, but it has a raise up of about 15 feet higher then the sump itself, so not to sure on that since I feel that this is gravity fed. An as far as a garden, I measured it today and it's about 670 to 680 feet away give or take, so that's outta the question.

Yes, the drain has to go down hill or you need to set up some kind of sump system. For example if your tanks were in a basement you could drain in a large tank with a float valve. At a certain height a pump would turn on and pump the water outside...
