In theory, I think Arowanas in tanks with plants on the surface would look up to navigate, hunt more effectively through vegetation, and not just blind lung feeding for pellets. Plus this is something Arowanas would naturally be used to seeing in the wild. The ping pong ball idea possibly could work if it keeps the Arowanas attention from the bottom of the tank.
What you have to understand is they are in the middle of their evolution in terms of rooting out or being wiped out by this condition.
We as aqaurists have only been keeping them for how long?
Couple hundred years tops, some of the Asian spots maybe thousands.In terms of evolution this is a drop in an ocean.
So this condition WE brought on by making them captive has not had NEARLY enough time to be phased out.
And if you are seeing it in WC adults, then it really is something they will just get anyway.
It's how they are built.
Hey, in a million years maybe their eyes will gain more movement range and it wont be considered DE.

Isn't that like staring into the sun or a very bright light. After a while your going to try to look somewhere else.
I you have got a designer Asian Arowana tank floating plants might not be the best idea. However, if your arowanas eye begins to drop, put the arowana in a tank with floating plants on the surface and attempt to stop the drop eye.
seriously if the floating plant or ping pong ball theory would have had even a 10% success rate, i think the MFKers would have known that by now.some of the guys here have kept fishes even before i was born. so to think it this way, that personally i would give a shot at the floating plant theory so that later i dont have the feeling that i dint do everything to prevent the DE.but in reality i dont think you can do anything to prevent the DE.
