This is not likely to work, once the silber aros are familiar with the ping pong balls or what ever items are placed they will ignor them anyhow. Something more likely to work would be some lilly pads, with an ever present food supply on top of them. If the aros are searching the top surface for the possibiltiy of finding food this would have a better chance of working. I did this with my silver when it was younger, but with large silvers the space that is needed to do this makes it unlikely for most home aquaria.

The best thing to provide is very large tanks to keep collisions at a minimum. This is what I believe is a large contributing factor of DE to silver aros.

agreed 100% but the ball now and then is absolutly worth a shot. keep the eyes looking up at all cost, change it up now and then and you will be fine .

No you will NOT be fine...you are not going to prevent DE with ping pong balls:screwy:

I have stated my beleif many times in a dozen other threads such as this. My silver which I have raised since it was 3" has DE in both eyes. Both cases of DE appear within a few hours after severe collisions that the aro suffered. Each eye happened on seperate occassions. All silver aros are prone to DE it is in there genetic makeup and has nothing to do with breeding. DE seems to me that it caused by trauma to the head, and unlike in the wild with out the need to search out/hunt for prey/food the aro is unable to recover from it. There have been reports of silver recovering from DE that are kept in ponds.

My advise, you want to prevent DE keep your aro from smashing it's head into anything.

keeping a aro from smashing his head is almost impossible? unless it is in a foam tank ? how do you propose to stop a aro from doing this just out of curiosity considering there skiddish nature ? you are proposing trama or brain damage to drop a eye right out of the skull ? i have 7 aro's 3 silver 1 jardini and 3 black . and one has drop eye but i bought him this way, i have no idea how it happened nor am i trying to cure it. it is just superficial to me . the only logical issue it could be from is weak muscle tissue due to a controled habitat. you seem to have a experience in this matter so i will agree with you , i just have not herd of this concept . interesting one tho ? i will continue to leave the ping pong ball in the tank just in case he wants to have a pickup game with my pacu :0)

Exactly, this is why you will find so few large silvers without DE. How big are your silvers, how long have you had them and what is the dimensions of your 400g(assuming the aros are in that tank)?

8 feet long 3 feet wide 3 feet tall , it is in my avatar . the 3 blacks are in my 150 right now. they are pretty small

all aros jump we agree on that

so why dont we see lots more black aros and jars with drop eye

i think it genetic

8x3x3= 530gal...

and if that tank is actually 3 feet tall then it looks like it is only about 2ft wide...

which would make it a 360gal...

I'm very curious though on how many have actually jumped from the member's who have multiple thousand gallon tanks that house them....

I know it's quite common with ne under say a thousand gallons-But me personally have never read about one being a jumper from the larger tanks....

Do you happen to have ne number or links you could provide me with ......
