Eating From Your Tank(?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My friend had some eels and goldfish in a tiny filthy pond in his filthy house a few years back, when stoned him and another dude pulled out an eel and cooked it up for lunch on the BBQ. The freind whose house it was suffered no ill effects but his visitor woke up at 3am and said he didnt stop vomiting or spraying from the other end for 12 hours, he said he thought he was going to die but didnt care as he felt so bad!
The pond was a stagnant disgusting stinking thing, god knows how anything lived. in it.I laughed so much when i heard they actually ate from it, the guy who owned the house lived in squalor so must have been immune to it but the other guy suffered terribly.

I first started eating what I kept, and would have considered only aquarium fish, when a soldier in Viet Nam
In Viet Nam Gouramis were often served with rice, we American soldiers just called rice and fish heads.

I once ate a giant gourami in Vietnam, all i knew is we were having fish so i was a bit shocked when i saw the GG being presented to the table, when i told the waiter how much they cost as a pet in Australia he was even more shocked.
This was in 2007, i think the gourami, some rice and spring rolls and some massive shrimp with a lot of beer cost me $12US and fed 3 of us very well indeed, when we had finished a local told me the resteraunt had ripped us off and we payed double the locals price!

My wife is entirely the opposite. I was joking we are well stocked with fish protein and would at least outlive our neighbors if a disaster hits, she still refused the idea claiming she’d rather starve knowing how much meds have been put into the tanks.
I think the fish meds are basically the same meds we use for the most part. for example, when i had diverticulitis they gave me Metronidazole which is the same med used for treating Malawi bloat

The only fish in my tank worthy (sizewise) for eating is probably my giant gourami. As mentioned they are a staple food source in some parts of Asia, so must be pretty tasty.

I've had it since 2015 and 2" in size. The thought of killing that fish in its prime for the family to sit down to eat fills me with horror to be honest.

And even if it died of natural causes and I was spared the personal trauma of killing it, then would it be wise to eat it anyway, not knowing what it had died from!!

So, for me, eating aquarium fish, our cherished looked after pets, is a non starter.....pardon the pun, lol.

I have got three tilapia fry, that were feeders but were to wily to get eaten by other fish. They are growing now. They are particularly difficult to net in a full tank.

But they are not bad looking fish. At some stage however, I am going to get them. If they are big enough, they will be fried up and consumed. Not by other fish.

THANK YOU. Finally, someone who agrees with me. At least someone around here has some sense lol.
