He was pairing off with normal JD and the two were getting along dancing and everything.. And this morning when i woke up he was dead. Ive lost a lot of EBJD in this tank outside. Do EBJD need pristine water, like water changes every week or the die ? :(

Sorry man, that sucks to lose a fish. I have never had a tank outside so I can't help much. Yes, EBJD need clean water as all cichlids do though. They are pretty dang hardy but thsat probably hurts more of these fish than it helps. :(

EBJD's typically just don't live. It's a gamble that 9 out of 10 people lose.. Sorry.. They're really cool fish. :(

I know all cichlids need clean water but the female jd in the tank is fine..I was thinking maybe they need extra clean water since their so sensitive. Havent done a WC in two weeks tho. Ive had 3 little ones die, i got this one at 3.5" so i thought we would make it if he lasted that long, super sad :/

Unfortunately, no... EBJD's just don't make it. And the 1 in 10 that might make it, usually end up with some defect as they get older...

I almost fell for it last night at my LFS.. They had an EBJD in a tank by itself, it was 1.5" long, they only wanted $35 for it, and I watched it feed - it ate like crazy. I *almost* spent $300 to bring it home...but made myself do more research right there in the store, and pulled up what I already knew...they have a 99% fatality rate, no matter where you get them.

Regular JDs are FAR more robust in nature. That your female was perfectly fine, while your male wasn't is no surprise, and is no indication of poor water quality, or anything else.

EBJD are more sensitive than regular JDs... they tend to get sick out of nowhere, especially when young (anything under 4", many die under 2")... and sometimes they just die no matter what you do. UV sterilizers are recommended when raising them.

What size is your tank and what are the water parameters?

That's way too much, you can find EBJD for $9.99 at petsmart, they usually don't last long in their tanks but if you pass by on the day they get their stock you might find some. I found two the other day and almost got em... but I changed my mind.

Some pet shops are incredibly greedy lol
