Maybe it's a generational gap but cnn not reporting something doesn't prevent me from finding out what I want/need to know. We live in a world where social media is huge. Everyone and their mom has a cell phone, laptop, tablet. Had their been a news worthy break out, you'd have known about it via trending on the Internet. I really don't get how freaking out over every time someone said I don't feel good, I THINK I MIGHT HAVE EBOLA, was good for the country? You have far too much faith in humanity if you expect them to react rationally to this type of information. People were getting angry at strangers for having common colds and flu like symptoms. People were trying to dictate what those people can and can't do. Like many people pointed out, the number of illness and actual deaths is tiny compared to things we SHOULD actually be freaking out about. Why is that unimportant? Why continue to spread fear of Ebola while ignoring things that are killing you, your friends, your family, your community?

I really like this thread. I'm not worried about Ebola because an Ebola break out has happened before. Also how is it that now we barely hear anything about it? We should be more worried about our wildlife and forests being taken away. Or all the people that die each year of preventable illness.

Government has told the media only to report confirmed cases and there's more interesting things happening overseas then the repetitive "some nameless faceless" people in Africa is/are sick/dying/dead. It's desensitized when it's reported that way. As long as they're not reporting Americans on home soil, it'll remain a topic viewed through the rear view mirror

Hello; Back to a few basics. First being that this particular thread is about Ebola. That there are other serious things going on around the world is not in question. A suggestion; start a thread in the lounge about these other things. Perhaps start a thread devoted to ranking these things and Ebola. But this thread remains about Ebola, so it should not be odd that various opinions are expressed about the events surrounding that disease.

Next; Ebola is still as deadly as it was before. Also there is not yet, as far as I currently know, a vaccine or other specific cure for the disease. There are supportative treatments that help, but my understanding is that these treatments do not assure survival. The threat remains untill a proper treatment and/or vaccine can be had.

Another aspect that seems important to me is the transmission of the disease. I get an impression that many see Ebola as hard to catch. Tell that to the thousands of infected in Africa. It may well be harder to catch than other pathogens, but the risk of picking up an infection is real. There is a reason Ebola workers suit up the way they are pictured and go around with disinfectant sprayers. That the health care workers are catching the virus in spite of the many precautions taken seems significant to me. My guess is that the doctor in Sierra Leone was taking the extra precautions when infected?

Lastly; I have of late been watching the behavior of the people while out and about. It seems most people are not changing behavior with regard to protecting themselves from infectious agents. I did see a man in Kroger yesterday wearing a full face mask.

You sir have some great ideas. About the only aspect of Ebola that remains interesting (to me) is the transmission. How people who should know better keep getting it. Why random people don't seem to get it but those with extended exposure supposedly using extreme measures of precautions are regularly getting it? It makes me feel quite safe and sound knowing unless my entire community breaks out im probably fine. That's why this fear and hysteria is amusing. All these people who have flown back, been out in the general public, visited loved ones etc etc. how poorly we understand the illness, how poorly equipped you guys say we are, how clueless health officials supposedly are, etc etc. all these months later, zero outbreak. Why is that?

@ Eddie: Media following government edicts on subject boundaries is the Land of Screwdom. Not Freedom.
Seeing that development is more alarming to me than the ebola. It is a "generational thing", because not long ago such media acquiesence would've been perceived as outrageous.
Internet could be limited too...think not?
ALL informational sources being on the table, choosing between them is our personal responsibility, and right.
I never thought, or said, that mainstream media does a good job researching & presenting issues. (don't believe anyone else thinks so either :) They are lazy & moronically repetitive.
Better journalistic principles were taught in my 7th-8th grade classroom.
There's nothing wrong with a thread with fear-mongering about ebola. anyway, the Govt is indulging us with the internet for now. it takes time for everyone to get convinced about what's best. for them.

Huh? How can social media be censored? You mean eventually it gets taken down? Watch a natural disaster happen right now, thousands of pics and first hand accounts will pop up on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, blogs etc etc. only a few will hit your major media websites but the first hand accounts will trend. If you see enough people posting similar events from different vantage points with pic proof....its up to you to decide if it's real or not. Not your big name media. The same thing would happen if an outbreak was being hush hushed.

No you can't believe everything on the Internet but you can't believe everything big money news corporations are telling you either. Gotta do your own research sometimes
