Yes, the Poret from Swiss Tropicals.

How often you will need to clean it varies on stocking levels, fish species and feeding plus which Poret PPI you choose and how much you install. I average 4 - 6 months between cleanings but should do it a bit more often to remove the waste better.

I have not had to replace any Poret yet in 5+ years.

Wow 5+ years....rinse the poret in tank water and put it back in that's it?

Yes, that's all you need to do. If you haven't already checked out the website, Stephan has a lot of info on choosing, using and cleaning the Poret foam.

However, I don't personally think that cleaning it in tank water will be sufficient since you want to avoid squeezing and twisting the foam excessively. I use either a hose sprayer on my laundry tub faucet or use the hose with a nozzle in the backyard.

Don't be too concerned with 'killing' the good bacteria using tap water for the brief amount of time it will take to clean the foam, especially on an aquarium that is mature and has a good bio-film in place. The good bacteria is hardier than most of us know.
