Eheim Filters not adequate?

I'm gonna try that first.
Try moving intakes more toward the center.Sent from my LG-L38C using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

Is it possible that I just don't have enough filtration with 2 Eheim 2217s? Would adding a third 2217 get me crisp, clear water? Or perhaps replacing the 2217s with a pair of larger Eheim's? I would go with a sump and filter socks, but this the only tank I have, it's stocked, and I'm not drilling the only tank I have.

Do you not have the blue filter pad that came with the filter on the bottom?

yep. blue filter pad very coarse, then the round ceramic rings, then another less coarse filter pad, then round ceramic balls, then another white filter pad pretty fine. Then I put some filter floss stuff on top of that (didn't come with the Eheim), and then a purigen bag. That's my canister from bottom to top.

2 turns an hour ain't much. Cichlids tend to be dirty fish. I always shoot for 10 turns an hour. My 240 has a 2262 and a sump with a 4300 GPH pump. More like 20 turns. I like filtration. Lots of it.

I personally like to turn my water over about 6x. I just don't think 2x-3x is enough if you're going for crystal clear.
I recommend you add this inexpensive canister for strictly mechanical (though the sponges will also colonize bb as an extra benefit)

I own a cfs700. Yes it moves alot of water. Yes its great at mechanical filtration, but I have found after 9 months or so the valves don't hold close well enough. So when I do maintenance on it I have to place a bucket under the hoses to catch dripping water. Then wipe more up for a couple hrs after re-hooking everything back up.
