I have also heard that you can use vasoline, but it does break down the rubber seal. I have also heard about using chapstick, but that one Im not sure about. Eheim sells a silicone lube, but the bottle is super small and its expensive.

I got the 2128 instead.. a pro II series with a build in heater of 210 watt.. it still heats up my 180 gallon pretty nicely... although winter.. i probably will have to add another heater in just to keep warm..
But ya.. all eheim replacment products are expensive.. there's no way to escape it.. their motors last a long time.. its the other little things that breaks...
i had to buy a impeller shaft for my 2224 because i snapped the axle.. who knew it was ceramic instead of plastic? That thing along cost me 13bucks.. And i'm still running an impeller with just 3 propeller instead of 5..
YUP ANY ceramic shaft will snap if you put any side load on them...totally Brittle, but long wearing and runs cool...

I don't know if using Vaseline on o-rings only applies to Eheim products. I really doubt that it does. But that may depend on what the filter manufacturer recommends for their product.
O-rings can be made of pretty much any material or combination thereof. They aren't just made of 100% rubber anymore.
It would be nice if we had this type of information from other filter manufacturers regarding the proper lubrication product for o-rings & seals.
I use only Eheim filters though I did just get an FX5 off Ebay that I will be setting up soon.

And Eheim being Eheim, they just don't disclose the composition of their seals too readily, not to mention they are not just standard o-rings...the seal in the top pre-filter tray, on my 2180, is hollow with a square profile.
If I had access to a high end auto parts store, I could pull something off the shelf, that would be a direct replacement, and at a much more reasonable price.... If huh?

But I have always known VPJ to be toxic to fish and known to break down rubber...

I think the issue the druggist was speaking of was not to use VPJ with LATEX products as it will deteriorate it.
