You are welcome for sure...

Can you believe how pricey the Impeller assembly is? 80-90 bux depending on who has one at the time.

I have the 2180 same as your 2080, but mine has the 500watt built-in heater. I run the bottom tray FULL of efimech and the next 2 trays full of efistratPRO 2 white pads then a blue Pad on top

Hmm... i never realized the 2180's heater was a 500watt heater..

I got the 2128 instead.. a pro II series with a build in heater of 210 watt.. it still heats up my 180 gallon pretty nicely... although winter.. i probably will have to add another heater in just to keep warm..

But ya.. all eheim replacment products are expensive.. there's no way to escape it.. their motors last a long time.. its the other little things that breaks...

i had to buy a impeller shaft for my 2224 because i snapped the axle.. who knew it was ceramic instead of plastic? That thing along cost me 13bucks.. And i'm still running an impeller with just 3 propeller instead of 5..

I knew I should have posted the link. It's in the Customer Center- FAQ, here it is http://www.eheim.de/eheim/inhalte/index.jsp?id=31494&typ=faq&bereich=produkte

I had never recommended using Vaseline until I saw this question answered by Eheim.
dee, I beg your forgiveness please!!
I might not have said it directly,
but I was sure thinking,
how full of shirt that "Vaseline Petroleum Jelly" comment was.

I would like you to know I will never doubt your word again, and tank you for taking the time to back that sentence up with the eheim FAQ...

Like the man said!! do it with vaseline, now there is no excuse...cause if Eheim says it can be done...well you decide!!:D:D

official Eheim (eng) FAQ's said:
Q: #07. How do I service sealing rings?

Answer: Each time you clean the filter, lubricate the sealing rings lightly with our aquatic maintenance spray 4001000 or with ordinary petroleum jelly (Vaseline). This increases the lifespan of the rubber sealings considerably and ensures easy mounting.

Once again Dee, please forgive me...tankz

No problem, you're forgiven :).

I don't know if using Vaseline on o-rings only applies to Eheim products. I really doubt that it does. But that may depend on what the filter manufacturer recommends for their product.

O-rings can be made of pretty much any material or combination thereof. They aren't just made of 100% rubber anymore.

It would be nice if we had this type of information from other filter manufacturers regarding the proper lubrication product for o-rings & seals.
I use only Eheim filters though I did just get an FX5 off Ebay that I will be setting up soon.

And Eheim being Eheim, they just don't disclose the composition of their seals too readily, not to mention they are not just standard o-rings...the seal in the top pre-filter tray, on my 2180, is hollow with a square profile.

If I had access to a high end auto parts store, I could pull something off the shelf, that would be a direct replacement, and at a much more reasonable price.... If huh?

Hell,
3M makes some stuff that you can fill a clean groove with and lay a bead of this stuff that 24 hrs later will cure into the perfect fitting o-ring...

But I have always known VPJ to be toxic to fish and known to break down rubber...
Matter of fact, back in the day, when condoms were optional, the druggist always said not to mix Vaseline and condoms, because they would deteriorate...

Yes Boys, it not just an old fable...
there was once upon a time
when the air was dirty
and
the sex was clean...

So one day, the decision was made clean up the air...
and now if you are not careful the good times will KILL ya...

I think the issue the druggist was speaking of was not to use VPJ with LATEX products as it will deteriorate it.
