Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Breeding Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started my project out about a year ago. I raised up a group of 6 het blue dempseys and let them pair off. They are certainly just as aggressive when pairing as the normals. I am left with a pair and an extra female who jumped to the next tank to survive the pair bond forming. One batch growing out now in a 48 gallon cube. They are about 1 month old and the biggest ones are a cm in size. I will be seperating the blues from the siblings this week, because as it was stated earlier they are certainly not as strong as their siblings. It looks like about 20 or so in the batch of about 150. I will be taking the siblings and growing them up as well to see if we can get some more het pairs. I know that everyone is talking about inbreeding here, but I really don't think that there are many dempseys being imported and only a few farms here in the US producing them in any real quantity. So really, most of these fish are pretty closely related as it is. I have a feeling that the gene does affect aggression and hence their ability to compete. All of the fry are siblings in my batch, but the blues are on average half the size of their siblings. Not to say that there aren't a few that are nearly the same size, but that is what variation gives us.

I am breeding mine in a 20 high bare bottom with a flower pot and a hand made clay cave. The male is about 4 inches, the female about 3.

Picked up my new tank on the weekend!
Not completely full yet but have a look anyway.
I got a heap of other fish with the tank that I've taken out and put in the 3 foot. But I kept the large pleco. He goes well with my ebjd :)

I'm no expert myself, but the owner of my LFS told me the Blue Jack story, and he said that because the blue coloring is due to recessive genes related to albinism, breeding two blues will result in deformed sick babies. He said the Blue Jack breeders breed blue fish with reg jack's that have the ressessive blue, but are not blue themselves. This results in a some blue babies and a bunch of regular babies. I would look into this before trying to breed them.

tank looks good, EBJD looks great. and wish you luck. Getting a blue gene jd can be hard. Really have to ask people if they are bread with a ebjd to get the blue gene. Best of luck.

Hi, Thanks, I have read into this a lot, and I know you can't breed two ebjds.
That's why I before above that I'm looking for a blue gene female to mate with him....

And yes it is soo hard to find one. No one wants to sell them around here because of competition. It's really bad. People lie about having them!

There is actually a pet shop a few hours away selling 'blue genes'. I emailed them and asked what the parents were and they said 2 x blue genes.
So I asked them how they know they are blue genes if you can't tell the difference. And I never got a reply.

I'm getting desperate so thinking I might just try my luck and buy a few.
Even if I don't get one I'll still be able to sell the bubs..
Might be good practice for me anyway. And practice for pappa :)

wow, your jd's must be from a good gene, I hope my start to breed soon, I turned up the heat, plenty of slate everywhere, no other fish, and my male is quickly moving his rear tail, im guessing to impress the female,

anyways i wish you success =)

Yeah, everyone in the States/Canada don't realize how good they hav it with the prices they pay on everything.. Gas/Fish/Food/everything, I can't wait until I get back to the sates to setup a monster tank.. Congrats on the new tank.. I look forward to seeing your progress..
