I was sold this fish and told that it was an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey. When I read about them, they're supposed to be shy but this guy isn't shy and likes to eat. I have never owned a Jack Dempsey before and when I looked up pictures and videos of the regular ones on the internet, they seem to also have some blue in them. So I'm not sure if this is an electric blue or not. Does anyone know? Also, can you tell if it's male or female? Thanks.20170125_002430.jpg

Yeah it's kind of hard to tell with the angle of the picture if it's an EB or not. Either way it's definitely a male and gorgeous. That's one of the best looking Jack Dempsey's I've seen in awhile.

definitely EBJD, I've always been a fan of the darker strains that maintain their black markings through maturity :D

as far as the sex, from body and head shape I'd also say male. But it's best to vent to be 100% sure when it comes to EBJD as the physical traits/characteristics can be rather misleading due to so much inbreeding to satisfy the demand for them in recent years

how big is this guy?

Thanks for the very helpful information guys! Yeah, the black markings threw me off. He's about 5.5 inches.

They also have blue gene dempseys that are very blue

Yes, but it's impossible to tell the difference between a regular jack and blue gene jack based on visual appearances. The blue gene itself is a recessive gene, therefore you cannot visually tell if a fish is carrying it or not.

I've also seen EBJDs with red on the dorsal fin, as well as Blue Gene Jacks and regulars with the same pattern

They also have blue gene dempseys that are very blue but still have some reds and golds. Kinda hard to tell in the pic but it looks like quite a bit of red on the fins

It does look like he has some red on the tip of his fin. I never noticed it before. I'll have to look more closely when I get home from work. Thanks!

Very nice fish. Post some more pics when you get a chance.- I've also noticed that substrate color can affect the coloration of your fish. If it starts to get a bit washed out you might want to switch to black sand
