  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi,ee need big tanks and if the public aquarium has three of them it will need to move them to a tank more bigger than the one that are being kept

Well...if they discharge while you have a body part in the tank, it'll definitely affect you. Depending on the size, it can probably make your heart stop. I don't believe that these are for the average hobbyists and should only be kept by scientists and very dedicated adavnce hobbyists.

ouch tha'd hurt. (U lying dead on the floor while eel swims happily in tank looking inoccent :)

No, I don't have an electric eel.

Even for a 3 foot EE, 180 gallons is honestly too small.

If a 180 is going to be atleast 3 feet wide (it should be even wider actually), it's going to be only 4 feet long, and that is really cramming the poor EE.
I still recommend a much larger tank.

You should start keeping an EE and put it to a 500g and see how much space is being wasted for a single fish.

EE only become active when it's hungry.

thnx, i was wondering about their electrical discharge, does it affect u?

My electric eel have shocked me before when I was srubing algae on the glass but the discharge wasn't strong enough. It was just a pinch, but still it's not recommended. The longer you touch them the more powerful the discharge they will give you and it will stop you heart and can kill you. In fish it actually stun them. One of my snakehead was a victim and the body could no longer move, but was still breathing normally.

Lungfish can actually stand up to the electric discharge of the EE and they don't seems effected by it. Not sure how.

The discharge is roughly equal to .5 amps and 300 volts per meter of eel. I was shocked pretty hard by my 36" one. I had the tank grounded to the wall scoket as well as a precaution, but it still gave me a jolt I could feel all the way to my shoulder.

The can only produce enough juice for one big shock, they get less powerful after until the eel needs to "recharge".

Well I'm in favor of giving a good life to pet fish, I'm not sure about what your opinions are. Regardless of the activity levels on an EE, it still needs more space than you are giving to yours. If you think it's a waste to give a huge tank to a fish that requires it, please don't give suggestions like that to others on this website.

I don't think you get my point.

Not many people can get 500g and 180g is already good enough. I know 500g is a lot better, but how much will you spend for electric bills, foods and hydro for just a single fish? You don't have an EE so how would you know?

It's you that should stop giving people suggestion if you don't even have the fish. You're just making people waste their money.:screwy:

Actually, I do keep fish. Just because I don't keep an Electric Eel doesn't mean I don't know about them.

King-eL, the problem is that 180 gallons IS NOT adequate for an adult electric eel. It isn't enough for the poor fish to make a full turn, do you not understand that? 500g isn't just a recommendation, it's a minimum. I'm not sure what your standards are, but on MFKers we like to give our fish ample space and a good life.
