electrical outlet question..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hey Ianab;
what's an amps? when you say size, are you talking about watts?

No worries - 3 or 4 amps depending on the size of the heater and light.

Just check the cords and make sure they are in good condition, no frays or spilts and no hot spots / discolouration anywhere along the cables. That could indicate a poor connection someplace that could corrode, arc, heat up and potentially catch fire. Providing all your cabling is in good condition, and you keep it dry, it will be pretty safe :)

Cheers

Ian

If it's a 15 amp circuit that already has a 13 amp load then there is a worry.
Chances are that it will be ok, but don't advise that everything is fine when you don't know the full load. It's unsafe.

If you really want to understand the basics, look up the following:
Alternating current
Direct current
Ohms law

Use this equation to determine what's the limit of wattage you can add to your circuit. Keep in mind that there are more than one outlet on some breakers, including permanent lighting fixtures.

W[atts] = A[mps] x V[oltage]

Most breakers are around 15-20 amps (limit 1650W to 2200W with 110V). You should also avoid loading your circuit more than 80% with a continuous current (ie. aquarium pumps, filters, etc.).

you know..i don't have much time looking things up..i can only keep up with my posts here..
so i'll just get someone to come over when I get thestuff.

thanks raul-7 though; you cleared things up a little

True.. but in that case she better not plug ANYTHING in that outlet :nilly:;)

What I'm saying is that an aquaruim isn't a big power draw. It's along the lines of a computer system or a SMALL home theatre setup. A collection of relatively low power device. 3-400 watts max.

Yes if you get carried away you can overload a circuit, but it's going to take a LOT of small appliances - or a couple of HIGH drain ones.

Why do I feel that you've wasted the time of every person who put thought into their post?

what was the whole point of me listing the items i wanted to plug in..you guys told me to get a list

thanks torontoleafs_rock..I was afraid that blue link was gonna take me to google.

i'll take a picture if you want..since I kinda don't get what you mean.
It is an pretty open area, which cords can run anywhere(if they were longer..)
