Seeing how these threads come up about every other week or so and I always see you in them I have a question for you. Have you ever owned a emperor 400? From the things you say and if I had to guess I would say no. Just a question I thought I would ask! And about you always bringing up the replacement cartridges makes me think you've never had one also. I've had one for 5 years now and I've never replaced them because I've never had to. I just rinse them out it tank water once in awhile and there not even about to fall apart.

Now for everyone else it really doesn't matter if you have a AC110 or a emperor 400 at the end of the day there both gonna get the job done.

yes. as a matter of fact, i used nothing but marineland HOB filters (emperors and penguins) exclusively for years before progressing to the better AuaClear filters.

im sorry, but the claim that you have not changed your filter for 5 years is complete BS, and trying to sell it is just further discrediting anything you say.

ive owned both, and more than that, i used to swear by emperor filters. but that was before i knew any better. much like most of the other people who suggest emperor or penguin filters, that was the only filter i really used (besides come crappy whisper and other cheap HOB filters). most people suggest emperors because of the "pretty" (yet basically useless) bio-wheel, and because they dont know any better.

as i said. check the stats on each filter and see for yourself. the facts are simple. the AC110 stands out in all aspects (besides cost, which has been explained already). when it comes to which one is "better", there is absolutely no contest.

There is no way your filter cartridges have lasted 5 years. I would have trouble believing one year and you say five? Yeah right. The bio-wheels aren't as great as everyone thinks. The surface area is very small for how big they are.

ac all the way, i hate my emperor, it is loud as crap, i have tried everything and nothing fixes it, and their replacement pads cost some money, but you can make your own.
I like the ac filters because:
quite
reliable
a lot of options you can do with media with them
they filter well
last forever

Well you guys believe what you will I really could care less! Like I said I have three filters that I started with 5 years ago they all have the same style blue filter pads and I've never changed them I just wash them out once in awhile in tank water and they haven't started failing apart yet. And Bitterespects and forbrinkle **** both you for calling me a lier. I come in here trying the to tell the OP about my experiences with both filters and you both disrespect me and call me a lier just because you two don't think it is possible.

I have both; both work well. I also have other HOBs that work well. I like my TetraTec PF300 and PF500s better than the Emperor 400 and AC110; primarily due to the directional out-flow tubes.

BTW - Since I got rid of the driftwood in most of my tanks, I have very little crud in all my HOB filter-pads/sponges. So I can believe the 5-year media claim made by erk419.

I use both AC and Emperors. I have a AC70, AC110 and Emp 400s and they all work perfectly fine for me. Both easy to maintain and works great so both

The key to success in this hobby is to keep an open mind and continually increase your knowledge through your own and others experience.

After 40 years of keeping fish, I am still learning; and re-learning things I thought I understood.

I think everybody needs to step back a little. We all have the filters that we prefer and think are better. Just because someone else disagrees or has had a different experience than you doesn't make them a liar. That's a HUGE assumption to make, with zero supporting evidence. Just because something didn't work well for you doesn't mean it couldn't work well for someone else.

We're all stating our own opinions here, and noone can be right or wrong. Yes, some filters perform better in certain ways than others, but they're actually pretty comparable filters. They're just different in little ways. It's up to you which one you prefer and use.

Amen to the last two posts...

I used to strictly use HOB filters (I've tried them all) then I went to canisters (Renas)...

At the times I thought I knew what was best because it worked for me. Now both my large tanks use sumps and I wouldn't have it any other way. They are in my *opinion* the best option.
