Emporer 400's or AC 110s for a 125 tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The AC110 is a much better filter then the emp400. You get much more effective mechanical filtration while equally effective biofiltration. Though the AC110 does cost more.

As much a I love the Rena XP3, IMO the XP4 is a joke. It cost $50.00 tp $70.00 more then the XP3 yet you only get about 10 gph more of actual flow along with one more basket of media. The XP4 is in the price range of the Fluval FX5 which is more then double the flow rate of the xp4, not to mention the extra volume you get. Not sure why anyone would purchase an XP4 after doing a little research.

Actual flow rates(without looking them up) are about, XP3 @ 187gph, XP4 @ 190gph, and the FX5 @ 475-550 gph.

U have a lot of options because everything is on sale right now. U can get ac110's for $57 not bad for 500gph, or get the aqueon 75 which does 400gph which I have and love for only $23 if your on a budget.
There are a few canister filters that are pretty easy to work with. The eheims are the best in my eyes followed by the fx5. There are also aquatops and cascades which are great easy to clean canisters. The odyssea cfs500 is a knockoff of the fx5 and is only $60 for 500gph.

Over the past week or so there have been battles about filtration. You really can't go wrong with a lot of the larger hob filters because we have so much media out there that can be used for any of them. The canister filters are what you make of them and what you want out of them.

Not true at all. The XP4 is $50 more but it's 100 gph more flow with an extra media tray. Well worth the $50.

I know that the Emporers are slow to start back up after a water change. The two I have work very well on the 75, but I think I need to go with something meant for 100 or higher on my next tank. I just found a AC 110 on clearance at a LFS for 50.99. Seriously thought about getting it and storing it for later. Except one little problem, if I don't pay the mortgage, I won't have a place to use it. Still I've seen reasonable prices online for the 110. Kind of wish I had know about those before, I would have run one on my 75. Who sells Aquatop canisters? Haven't seen those in any of the LFS or on Dr Foster and Smith. Does the uv really help?

Research the actual flow. The XP3 is 187 gph and the XP4 is a gutless 190 gph. By comparision the XP4 is a POS and for a few bucks more you couldve gotton an FX5 with more volume and 2-2.5 times the actual flow of that worthless XP4

Get an FX5. They do an awesome job and aren't that hard to maintain. I clean mine out about once a month.
