Emporer 400's or AC 110s for a 125 tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have found the replacement catridges for the 400's cheap on Dr Foster and Smith. About 2.00 each when you order in bulk 12 or 24 backs. My brother and I keep saying we will split the cost on a bulk pack, just haven't each had the money at the same time yet. He runs a Emp. 400 on a 75 salt setup. I like the idea of transferring a filter from an established tank, should have thought of that before instead of going with all new ones. I still like the idea of getting a ac 110 to go with it. One 400 left on my 75 leaves it set up for whatever I put in it next.

On my 400's I don't use the cartridges instead I cut blue filter pad and place it in the gray carbon cartridges. Much cheaper and I hate carbon so it's a win win.

I've thought of that, but never tried it. I could cut that to fit all my filters, including the Whisper ex 70 on the 30. That one is expensive on cartridges as well. I'll probably order the blue pad instead of regular cartridges next time I need cartridges. That would likely be in the next 2 weeks, they are all needing attention. The blue pads look like they would do the job, I just never got around to trying them.

the blue /white bonded pads are superior in most every way to any cartridges:)

Also the blue/white bonded pads are a lot cheaper. I used to use something like that in a pond filter once. Had a 6 ft kids pool with 2 turtles and a pond filter. My brother called it a "redneck jacuzzi".

$7.99 and they last 3 times longer than any filter cartridge

That would be one way to save a little money. To set up the 125 the way I'm thinking of might be expensive when I get it all done. But to me it's worth it. When I get all 3 tanks up and running, a 125 and 75 could get expensive to maintain. I don't even count the 30, its easy next to the other 2. I also have another tank about the size of the 30, not being used, just as a back up. Never know when you will need it. Don't think I can go any bigger than a 150 at most. Only way I could go a bigger setup is outside. I live in the wrong area for that.

Don't count out sponge filters. I've used them on small tanks 30 and below as the main filtration with no problems. I always used powerheads on them instead of air pumps

When I had my emperor 400(I used them for my 110 and 135 tanks), I never used any media trays or cartridge. They used to make a cell pore material cut to the size of the slot on the 400. I use those and cut a piece of sponge in front of the bio material. All I do is when I do my WC, I rinse out or replace that sponge.

The only problem I have with the emperor is that it is very loud for my taste; but it has great bio capacity.

The only problem I can see with using a powerhead on sponges is my big jag. He won't leave intake tubes on his filters now. How do I keep him from messing with powerheads? When I do move a filter, I am going to start siliconing the intake tube on. I'll see if he can take those off! I also am thinking I may have to silicone the sponge bases onto a rock or something to keep jag from knocking them over. I can see the sponges as an inexpensive backup and just a little extra filtration. No such thing as too much filtration.
