I wouldn't try to breed them, to be honest. They are not an animal a lot of people can look after, you may end up having to sell them cheap to get rid of them (or be stuck looking after a lot of young ones), and essentially putting a lot of dangerous animals on the market.

The market for captive bred animals is huge, and they'll move at the highest prices......

That's the only way to have success at keeping/breeding these guys, and any Monitor really.......Raise a group of hatchlings together and you'll never have problems........Try to pair two wild caught or captive raised animals that havn't been raised in a certain social structure and you'll encounter every Varanid problem in the book.......Including a possibly violent death......

If your going with a pair your defenetly going to need 2 huge enclosures and a neutral one for them to meet, not just one.

Not worth it unless you can get captive bron ones. 90% of the imports I have seen, died pretty quickly. You might get lucky but for the price, I would just ere on the safe side. Also, this is not a monitor you should expect to handle. EVER. At least not over 4 feet and certainly not freely. Use trap boxes or a compartmentalized enclosure so that you can shift him for cage maintenance. Otherwise, it will be a bigger struggle than it is worth.

a lizard 8 feet long with a mouth like this

that tends to ambush the owner is not something that belongs in captivity IMHO

sorta like a velociraptor from jurassic park. dangerous, beatiful, and alluring for it, yet will always get you in the end.

Whots the main reasons for imports not lasting in captivity!! Is it that they just dont settle in to captive cages! IE! not eating properly and getting stressed! or its when they come in from the asian farms/wild" they are full of internal parasites and just die from those!!
Yes buddy i agree with the not handling as id wont to keep to a minimum for breeding eneyways!

These guys are pretty susceptible to parasites and disease after the stress of transport.

I would rather pay twice the price for one that is CB than half the price on four to have only one of them live.

Because most people try to stick them in a 6' Vision and expect them to thrive........

I've never de-wormed any animals I've put in my personal collection and never had any problems - Proper care and husbandry is all you need......The animals will cycle out any Parasite load quicker and more efficiently than any man made poison will if given the options to do so......


Don't give them the options, and they'll wither away eventually........
