Equipment to stay away from

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been lucky with glass heaters so far (Touch wood), but my biggest peeve has to be not buying a regular rectangular tank. I have a 55 Hex and it is a nightmare because of the additional panes of glass and the awkward shape. Yeah it offers slightly better viewing because of the angles that you can look in at, but because of the awkward footprint laying out drift wood, clay pots and plants is a nightmare.

maybe if everything wasn't made in china it would all still be good,

It would also cost 10x as much.

I have never had any problems with marinelands, but I can see how people would. They aren't top quality, I have just been lucky with my few.

I also agree with Rio's. The only Rio I have that has never screwed up is a rio 50 power head in my turtle tank.

I do have to disagree with Rena. Personally this is the one canister brand I have never had problems with.

I have seen too many Coralife power strips catch fire to use them myself. $3 timer from target for me frow now on thank you very much.

Wardley, Tetra, and Whisper.

Hagen makes some good products, but they also make some junk! Same with API, the products I like; I love. The other products however...

these are all good opinions i think pretty much all power filters dont filter very good cuz theres no way to cycle the water from one end of the tank to the other unless you install a powerhead which for my budgett is not an option... maybe a home made wet-dry or sump is the way to go for me...

The failure of threads like this is that you can't take the measure of the person behind the post. Any thirteen year old with a ten gallon tank can be an expert while hiding behind the screen of a computer.

For example, post number two (that is as far as I got...probably as far as I will get...) A missunderstanding in maintenance is mistaken as a design flaw:

to me all the Marineland Penguins ....All start crapping out and i always gotta shoot out the impellers. and sometimes the "bio wheel" falls off and doesnt even spin.

Like everything else, Penguins must be maintained and cleaned. And 'cleaned' does not mean just the pad. A Bio-Wheel that does not spin is a sure sign of excessive growth in the intake tube and impeller housing. That's not a design flaw, that is a lack of maintenance.

I have three Pengiuns that are each over three years old and still running as well as the day they came out of the box. Zero parts have needed to be replaced.

yeah i dont think penguin is discontinued.. did you get that off their website?(idk who im talking to exactly, but someone said something about the penguin line being discontinued)

my tetra filter is trash. Burnt out after 1 month

whisper filters. i'm just getting back into the hobby and i use to always use whisper 500. i had 2 on my 75. I never had any issues. in storage one got cracked so i bought a whisper 60. suppose to be the equivalant to the old 500. its crap. pads and biosponge doesnt fit right in proper slots. they seem to small. and even when everything is clean water pours out over the intake valve. the 500 would do that if the pads were clogged. the new ones do it even when the filter is brand new. so a lot of the water being sucked in the intake isn't being filtered.

ive just recently upgraded my 75 to a 125 and put 2 AC110 on it (along with a marineland magnum 350 that i had) the AC110 are GREAT filters. not that i have to tell everyone that tho.
