Establishing a breeding population of Clown Loaches in....Florida?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Parts of Florida have well water that comes out of the ground in the 70's. That is your "heating" system! A constant supply of "warm" water! That and solar heating the water would make your plan doable for 6-9 months of the year. In the coldest months you would need another heat source or keep them inside.

As does the commercial farm that I was previously referring to, yet they still had no luck in keeping clown loaches long term, let alone breeding them. 75F isn't exactly "warm" water for clowns.

With an "average" year round air temp in the 80's it could be done in the Philippines too!

In the Phillipines, it's simply not cost effective, not when 3 inch clowns can be purchased locally through wholesalers for less than $1 US.

Hello, I am a new memeber to the site. I still can't post pictures, but as soon as I could I will send info on my ponds. I live in Homestead, which is south of Miami, Fl. I currently have an open water system, meaning that water comes out of one well and directly back into another well, therefore the water is always crystal clear as the substrate is pure coral rock. All of the other fish that I have are very prolific, especially the cichlids (I couldn't get them to stop reproducing if I tried) My pond is roughly 80,000 gallons, but I also have 8 above ground 1,000 gallon tanks that currently house cichlids. If I knew how, I would definitely give the clown loach breeding idea a try. Please let me know if you have any helpful info.
Thanks

Adding to my previous comments, the water temperature coming out of the well is 72 degrees year round, and the average air temperatures are around 80 degrees. This year we had maybe 3 days where it went down to the 50's but that still does not affect the water as it is always running and is 72 degrees regardless.

Hi Frank,

The commercial farm that I was previously referring to is also based in Homestead and is on the same type of water system as you. The water temp is simply too cold for growing out, or breeding clown loaches.

It also tends to drop below 50F from time to time in Homestead, as the photo below was taken on that same farm on Jan 22 of this year. (that's frost on the ground)

:grinno: actually its around 3-4$ how much do they cost in the us anyways???

That was wholesale cost bro, not retail.

I think I know the farm you have pictured, if I'm not mistaken it's on 193 ave between 256 st and 264 st. I don't know if he runs water full time or not, either way, if the water is constantly running it doesn't really affect the water temp too much since it comes out of the ground at 72 deg. and goes right back in. Keeping the fish at a constant temp regardless of exterior weather. Hard to beleive, but true.
