Saying i have 6 6" red belly piranhas usually shuts them up or facinates them, then they ask 50 questions....

Alot of society is ignorant to some of the finer things in life, better to have hobbies then be a drug addict!!

To me it's a hobby. There was a free 44g corner tank on craigslist that I was going to pick up until my wife threatened that I better not get it...but most my honey-don't-know money goes to my fish etc.

Quick story, picking up stuff at a the fish store, and the poor employee was explaining that the pleco wouldn't really work in the 5g tank with the betta. At which point I chirped in 5g? just do a water change, the woman looked at me like I had 5 heads...water change on a 5g!!! I don't have that kind of time.... <facepalm>

my wife acts like im crazy because every saturday morning i get up early and do my maintenance on my tanks...she also gets mad when we stop by my favorite LFS and we're there an hour hanging out talking with the guys there....sometimes she tries to piss me off, like she'll tap on the tank or threaten to pour bleach in my 240g....i just tell her her dog can have the same fate...i dont think she would really do anything but it still pisses me off that she acts like its stupid or something.

I always have people look at me funny when I admit I keep fish. "That just a TV you have to feed and clean" is my favorite response so far. But, I have three tanks, and I wouldn't give up any of them. Like others have said, people can't understand unless they have experienced it.

I don't know... My girl is fascinated with it. Then again she also loves watching beavis and butthead w/ me any time I want.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that my fish scored me chicks and she's a keeper lol.

Any time I tell a girl about them they think its so "deep" and "different", but she's the only one who will watch the fish AND Beavis and Butthead and she's gorgeous so I picked her over the lot.

I even give her a say in what fish to pick out next... she has great taste she said she wants me to get a kelberi pbass to join the Goliath African Tiger fish I have which she dubbed "twinkle toes the tiger fish" to my horror.

I've always felt odd, I wanted to be an entomologist when I was a kid. My parents thought I was odd too, with a dozen praying mantises kept as pets amongst other creepy crawlies. My parents still think I'm odd. Now, my boyfriend tolerates it because he's into HAM radio. I'm like, "HAM radio still exists? why? we have cell phones and free long distance?" lol
I still have goldfish, the biggest is about 12 inches now. Her name is Betty Bass. I also tell people that you can train them to do tricks and show them the video on youtube from the R2 fish school http://www.r2fishschool.com/. I also try to get some comments in that some of the fish I have might be extinct in the wild and would be extinct all together if it wasn't for me and other fish keepers. That gets the environmental factor in, that they can relate to.

I don't think fish keeping is as crazy as dressing up your dog with a different outfit everyday. lol

Actually, just last weekend i got a funny look when a shop keeper was talking to a customer about what can be kept in a 5G - 10G tank (think he was planning on buying a tank and looking for stocking ideas), and the customer who saw me looking at some lighting equipment turned and asked me what size tank i had and what i kept... (i guess at the time he thought i must have had a small tank coz i was looking at bulb to replace in my Venus Fly Trap planter) i answered my smallest is a 10G with crays and largest tank is almost 7ft with a puffer... i could see his jaw drop in disbelief and then he didn't ask me any more questions...

I guess he felt a little put off when he realized i wasn't a casual fish keeper, and the lady at the shop kept going on about my tank...
