Ever move a tank WITH water in it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LOL. dude, i did this with a 55 bowfront on a stand about 1/4 drained and only had to move it about 5 ft across the walkway on carpet. it was a B!atch. believe me, you'll spend more time huffing and puffing trying to move it than it will take you to drain it and fill it. i'll never be that lazy again!!

whats the stand made out of?

ive moved my 55 around a bit by putting a 2x4 against the wall and using another one to "pry" the tank/stand around... my stand is real wood.. would never try it with a sawdust/glue stand...

it can be done.. however not really the best idea...

Damn. I guess its no then. LOL I was hopin one of you crazy bastards had a ''Yeah, I moved my 125 once.'' story. The stand is built like a tank. All solid oak, all joints are dove-tailed, glued and screwed. I would be sliding it on oak flooring as well.

I was looking at these...

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Sliders-Mini-Furn-10001/dp/B000KL28RW

Says they'll hold 220 lbs per corner. Thats 880 lbs max.

75 gallons of water x 8.35 per gal. = 626.25 lbs
That leaves me with 253.75 lbs.
The stand cant weigh anymore then 50 lbs.
So 200 lbs is left.
I have 60 lbs of gravel in the tank.
So 140 lbs is left.

I just dont know how much the tank weighs itself. The tank is about 12 years old. Thats when all the tanks were quality. The glass is 1/2'' thick. I doubt that tank weighs 140. Hmm maybe it does...LOL.

Even so I could take 1/2 the water out and lighten it by almost 300 lbs.

Hmmmm... My balls are growing larger.

your going to have to lift the stand to get the sliders under it..... which unless you are willing to do something super not smart means you are going to have to drain the tank anyway...

I have moved small aquariumsaround 10 gal. with some water at the bottom or tiny aquariums of 1-5 gal with more water in them , I would never attempt it with a tank of this size.

Those magic sliders rock. Screw the tank, don't risk scratching expensive oak flooring. Even if you only drain half and leave the fish in think of the stress the sloshing around from the move is going to cause them.

Drain tank, fill up some buckets with the water, put fish in buckets, move tank (with sliders!), fill up tank, drain about half the water from the buckets, drip acclimate your fish, dump em in and you're good to go!

if ya leave it full be sure to video the whole adventure I'm sure it would be interesting
to say the least

yeah ive seen plenty of tank moving videos on youtube...theyre the funniest thing ever...i saw one fall down steps once

Drain it, anything that holds water will do for the fish, we are talking very temporary here. Use the bath or something if you've not got anything to hand, good luck with the move

I've moved 55-90 gallon tanks across rooms before without a full drain.

I took about 80% out, picked up one end and slid in an upside down rug/welcome mat (so the rubbery bottom was up but the fluffy part was face down), picked up the other end and did the same, then dragged it across the room, clearing out space to set up the new larger tank. I did the same with a 90, just rotating it 90 degrees and sliding it about 5 feet, though that one was much more difficult.

I of course have hardwood floors and am a competitive strongman, so I guess that made it a bit easier. Still, under the right circumstances, it can be done safely. The key was the little rugs underneath. No way it happens without that. I have dragged my 50% full 110 out a few inches before to check for leak damage, but it was almost impossible to put back into place. Took everything I had.
