ex ‘Cichlasoma’ Atromaculatus-Jeff has them-Info Please??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This thread is really giving me a heck of a charge! Can't wait to see them in tank Balton, and good luck to you! PS - sounds to me like to lucked out in the wife category - taking care of your fish while you're at work - can't put a price on that!

William. I mean William!
Oh dear lord of all things written and heard.

The names Michael and Balton should not have appeared together. That's one vowel off from a singer/songwriter whom I did not wish to mention. Talk about wires crossed or Freudian slips. Jeez. I'm not even a fan. At not least consciously ;)

Jeff, if the 'doom and gloom' post was mine, I was responding to William's original comment about the fish being available for $10 in a few months.
I wasn't trying to rain on anyone's parade and I don't think they'll be $10.
1" fry for $25 sounds about right to me.

And btw, 'doom and gloom' for whom exactly?
I think it's great that these fish are here and spawning.
I'm looking forward seeing them back in the hobby in a big way.

Also looking forward to seeing some pics Balton!!!:naughty:

Don't worry d.p, you're not hurting my feelings. ;) I respect the fact that you call it like it is...plus all you're fish expertise, I'm always awed by your insider knowledge of vendors, importers and breeders.

Thanks, though it's not really insider knowledge. I just visit sites alot of them frequent, and talk with a few via email and such. It helps that I retain alot of what I read, and have a huge fish library. It allows me to put a small piece from a post together with an old article and jump to some conclusions.

As for Jeff's comments about these being quite possibly true ornatums, I'd defer to his expertise. He's seen them, I have haven't. I was just going by geography which in the past was enough to seperate species. One of the reasons turq sev's were considered a differant species (besides the adult size differance) was the fact the are found hundreds of kilometers away from the range of green sev's. Classic diagnostics would rule out the possiblity of it being the same species if there was no way to link them. DNA is rendering a lot of classic diagnostic clues obsolete though (pike cichlids in the Geophagine tribe ... wtf?!?!? :screwy:).

I still need to see Mel's beauties ... hopefully when fall comes and we try the cichlid meetings again.

Good luck with them!!!

Pics?

Gotta love the impulse buy - well done... getting the two species.:headbang2

Aren't you glad that your name isn't Micheal Balton?!! Great pick-up, Balton. I hope that set up will last. It looks good. Having a docile pair of Festae must really make a difference. Mine are jerks! Keep us posted. Do you think the pairs will ever breed around the same time? That would be insane.

Definitely glad my name isn't Michael Balton, that would suck.

I've had Festae that were complete jerks too. I'm happy to have a pair that can stay in a community tank. Hopefully I'll get some breeding action from all of them eventually, will keep ya'll updated.

It's only been a week since I posted but these are the coolest fish.

The Ornatum are getting along good together now, no more tail biting it seems. They're starting to get a tad bit more color too, mainly in their fins. I love these fish! They're going to be soooo cool when they get bigger!!

The female Atromaculatus is such a pig, she's already bulked up more than the male. She's not scared of me so much any more but the male is still shy.
