some people pay tens of thousands for koi, heck even a few million (look at Guiness Book of World Records).
While I wouldn't spend too much because I don't have that much money, if I was rich and was into goldfish, I would! Same with people and cars. Some people will pay tons and tons for american muscle cars. Just depends on what your hobby is and if you got the money.

Its all perceived value and some rich people WANTING to own expensive fish. They want to have a $3000 fish so someone will meet the need.

Perceived value?! Everything is about perceived value - brands. cars. etc. It isn't that someone wants to spend the money, it is that a high price has been put on intensively bred goldfish, and it is worth it for many people!
I wouldn't have believed some of the prices until I visited a goldfish breeder/importer... I was literally in awe when I saw these fish, and that had nothing to do with a price tag on it that inflated my infatuation with them.

Thats why I said its all about perceived value and not "This is about perceived value".
Im not saying those high prices arent necessarily worth it, but these kinds of "luxury items" are driven up in price by the desire of many to have expensive things for the sake of having expensive things.
I'm chiming in late here, but I think that plain old $0.30 feeder Comets are nicer looking than these fancy goldfish. No offense to those who love them, but I just think fish who have a more natural shape are more attractive. I'm put off by the pop-eyes and big, lumpy heads on these fancy goldfish.
I used to hate the fancies, but after having a few they grow on you! The wens on the fancies are something else!

i second that. i used to think anything but the pond/comets were ugly looking, and swore id never buy them. but slowly, one by one, i started gaining a liking for each of the species.
now if it waent for having a large pacu i could never part with, i would most likely make my 250g a fancies tank.
