As I was browsing the tanks in a LFS called 'Aquarium Warehouse' in the Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia) I saw a Silver Arowana for the very first time. Its was 12-14" and $595!!!

I also saw for the first time in a pet shop a 16" Red Tail Catfish for $990.
8" Tinfoil Barbs for $100 each.
And for the very time seeing one in person, a 7-8" Clown Knife, for $300!!!

This were outragous prices, considering the the U.S the Silver would be like 30 bucks, the RTC, about 50, the barbs, 20, and the CK about 25.
But then again, I've never seen these fish (Apart from the barbs) in a LFS before. Let alone in person, except for a 4ft RTC in a Public Aquarium.

Anyone else got some expensive fish at thier LFS?

OMG!:WHOA: Those prices are CRAZYYYY and rediculous!! Is it just THAT one LFS that has those prices OR all the LFS in Queensland Australia are like that??

Those are normal aussie prices. The industry actually keeps a tight watch on the big fish, keeping the prices high. I don't mind it, it just means theres less 3-5 feet long fish being stuck in 10g.

Most stores don't even stock those fish, they have to be specifically ordered in, the only Knifes that are common are black ghost knifes, the only times I've seen the brown ones they'll run up to $50 easy for a 2 inch fish.

giant Gouramis will run from $100-300 easy, I know a guy who breeds Jaguar cichlids who lives on the profit he gets from those, fish seem to be generally more expensive in aus.

Those fish are considered rare in Australia.

If you want them..you need to pay for them.

There are other LFS that would charge more for them...particularly the silver and clown knife.

Yes, indeed fish are considerably higher priced than the US and UK. I see (1 time every 2 months or so) a white or regular Giant Gourami that is 18-22" for a cheap $450.

Cichlids are moderately priced. A standard 9" Red Devil goes for $45. Pretty cheap. A 2" convict is about $5-$8.
A 12" Oscar is $60-$70.
A 12" Jardini is usually $200. And these are native!!!
Plec's are extremely outpriced where a .75"-1" bristlenose goes for $7.50.

I mostly just see the bread and butter, plus a good selection of cichlids and some natives. There are many others, but still, a lot to list.

Also, many fish you US people take for granted, we have to pay top dollar for. Because they have to import them for starters. They are not regular fish. I supose its a good thing because not many people would buy a 2" RTC. They'd be like $70!!

Another thing is that marine fish are actually pretty cheap. A regular Lionfish thats 8" goes for $70.
Then again, we have the Great Barrier Reef, so marine fish are quite easy to get. Hell, you can find great marine fish literally directly east of me. reefs and all.

Yeah the prices are fairly high but what can we do about it?, nothing....

It's kinda good in a way because there will be alot less being stuck in small tanks, if you are going to pay top dollar for a fish you are going to do everything you can to keep it happy and healthy.

But I dont get why Saratogas are so expensive when they are natives..... maybe they are actually imported from some Asian country:confused:

Bloody expensive fish, I hate it but thats life. If you live in Australia and you don't want to pay a lot for fish, keep rocks.
