Hey guys, I recently acquired two pbass from a couple of my lfs, after having been out of the hobby for a few years. One I got on Saturday, and the other one I got yesterday. Basically the thing is that the two fish are very shy, and timid. Both are young about three inches and in a fourty gallon quarantine tank. The one that I have had for a longer time is starting to come out of its shell, however they are both still stressed and do not have the awsome colors they had at the stores. I have noticed that that they like to hide during the daytime and when I have the tank lights on. However, when the tank lights go off they are very active. How can I get them to come out more?

welcome to monster fish keepers good too have you here.

what im understanding here is that you want your bass to get more color right? well i wouldnt rush it there still small colors wont kick in till the 6-8in range.. so wait a lil food pays a big roll too. maybe your ph is too high/low? can i get a full range of your water parameters.

If you want the fish to be less shy try adding some dithers if not more cichla. What temp r u running the tank at currently, you should have it at 87 degrees at least. Driftwood and some plants also helps them to come out more..

hey guys, thanks for replying

to peacockbass,
it is not that important that i want the fish to get more color, it is moreso that i want them to come out of hiding during the day time, or when tank lights are on, like when they do during the nigt time, when it is dark they are very active. and thanks for welcoming me

to silverdragon,
i set the heater to 82 degrees, as i don't happen to trust it, i had a similar one (basically the same model just another heater, the one im running is a few years old) that a few years ago had boiled all my fish in a 55 gallon tank. also i need to get a thermometer on this tank. i would like to get another cichla with them, however i don't want to be spending $30 to $40 on cichlas as i want to get some other fish in with them, such as a rtcxtsn (i know i need a big tank later on). however, if no one picks up the current pbass thats at my petland discounts it will find its way into the tank. also ive been currently searhing for a piece of driftwood, just cant find anything that i like. didn't know you could keep plants with them, what would you recommend?

i will let you guys know the water paramaters once i get a new test kit, ive been out of the hobby for a few years

you can keep most floating plants like hornwort or duckweed.. Otherwise you can just use silk plants or plants that you get stuck to driftwood like anubias etc.. Definately get a thermometer cause that's important.. Otherwise your pretty much on the right track and their probably just settling in :)

im gonna go pick up some stuff later on, looks like they were just stressed out from their moves, their out in the open today not hiding, so im happy

just how would i get the one ive had longer to not eat while feeding the other, one of them is fat, ate all the live, the other hasn't eaten in the two days ive had him

that may be because the one which is eating is "superior"...
they form hierarchies.
so with only two,the superior one usually eats first.
try getting some dithers around the same size as the bass.
the weaker guy will eventually come around.usually.

you can try hand feeding them to make sure each get enough food.
