Hey guys, I recently acquired two pbass from a couple of my lfs, after having been out of the hobby for a few years. One I got on Saturday, and the other one I got yesterday. Basically the thing is that the two fish are very shy, and timid. Both are young about three inches and in a fourty gallon quarantine tank. The one that I have had for a longer time is starting to come out of its shell, however they are both still stressed and do not have the awsome colors they had at the stores. I have noticed that that they like to hide during the daytime and when I have the tank lights on. However, when the tank lights go off they are very active. How can I get them to come out more?

wuddup bradda? did you get them from new world aquariums? anyways bump your temp to 87... feed them everyday and give them time. have you checked your water quality lately? water quality is very important with these guys ;)

i keep all my baby peacock bass up at 86-87 degrees and a key is just to let them settle in and give them hiding spots and they will come out more. Like stated before dithers are a good idea, when small giant danios are good and once the pbass get big enough to eat them, and they will in no time you can get some silver dollars as metentioned before.

Hi there

I'm actually having the same problem. While mine isn't hiding, he just kind of sits there staring at me, on the bottom of the tank.

He seems healthy but not too keen on eating pellets atm, and hides a bit when I get up close. Will try the dithers thing - only prob is that everything seems to cost a fair bit when you're only after them for distraction!

hey humpyhead, i got the same problem as you they are active when i'm not there but when i show up they run, you are fortunate in that yours is willing to take pellets, mine only take live food, got them like that from the stores, and with one being about 3.5" and the other being around 4", they are too young to convert, i know what you mean about costing a fair bit, as i wanna buy better stuff

hey oscarboyz, yeh im gonna go get a new heater and thermometer tomorrow, yeh i have provided them with hiding spots and have allowed them to settle in, the thing is that danios won't work, i know that because i had a huge minnow in with them since sunday night, this morning it was gone and the pbass that i have had longer had a nice fat stomach, don't really like the look of the silver dollars either, and the only fish that i would be willing to keep would be some tinfoil barbs, but the stores around here only have small ones, and that would mean only one thing to my pbass, feeding time, but ill try to look around maybe there are some fish nice/big enough that i would use as feeders

whats up boostenlight, i got one of them from petland but i got the other from new world aquariums, i just didn't know about new world before, awsome place, i got the temp above 80 right now, ~82-83 degrees, i was able to get a partial water quality test done at petland, unfortunately the ph and ammonia was a little high, but i did a water change and i can tell that the pbass aren't as stressed now, im gonna have to go buy some stuff tommorrow, in order to do a full analysis, i also feed them every day

good news is that for most of today the pbass were no longer hiding and hanging out in plain view, made me happy, and they no longer ran from me, another good thing is that when i put the food in, the pbass that i have had since two days ago was the one that ate, and the other pbass didn't, its a good sign, because the one that didn't eat ate all of the food yesterday, leaving the other one with no food, the pbass only ran after i fed them because i stuck my hand in the water while feeding them ( i was not handfeeding ... yet)

Sounds like you're getting there!

Have you found that if they don't eat their food and you have to go cleaning it out (the sunken pellets etc) after a couple of days or do a water change, it seems like its back to square one, with them being timid again?

sorry humpyhead, i'm not feeding them anything but live so i don't really have that problem, i'm trying to avoid it, and they are to young to convert to other food yet, but i know what you mean, i used to have other fish before i went on brake from the hobby that supposedly ate pellets, dry food only, and yet they only took it rarely, was a b**** to clean after them, i also get what you are saying about them going back to square one, but mine aren't that bad, they went back into hiding after i put my hand in the water to feed them, but they were over it today, and yet when i went to change filters because i got replacement impellers for one of the filters that i have, they went back into hiding, however i do feel like they are setting in more and more into their new environment, and are starting to hang out more instead of hiding, i just hope they won't do this when i will put them into a bigger tank, hopefully over the summer

I went to the store and was able to buy a thermometer, api ammonia test kit, api nitrate test kit, and a api nitrite test kit, along with a ph test kit made by warley.

I was also able to get the new replacement impellers from marineland for my penguin 150. So I got my new filter up and running. (The impeller was broken from the start, I would have returned it, but I live two hours away from the store.)

Anyway, I thought that the water parameters were good, unfortunately when I tested it, the water is pretty bad. Following are the results.

Temp: 80 degrees
PH: 7.4
Ammonia: 8.0
Nitrate: 10
Nitrite: 0.50

Fortunately, it seems as if the pbass are getting more settled in. Unfortunatley, the water parameters are bad, please help.

wow! bad isnt the world lol.. i am guessing you didn't cycle your tank or something. how big is the tank and what kind of filtration are you running? do you do water changes?

hey boosten audi, you might want to change world to word

The tank is 32 gallons, and the filter that I'm running is a penguin 150. I know I said 40 in my first post in the thread but then I calculated it, turns out its not as big as I thought. I haven't used in years, so I forgot how big it was. I know I need a big tank, need to get the money, I am building a 400 during the summer. Unfortunately, I sold off all of my old big ones (in the 100s) when I got out of the hobby for a few years. Will they be able to survive until then, or do I need to upgrade asap?

I did cycle the tank for about 2 weeks. The filter is a penguin 150. And I do a 20 to 30% water change every week, until the paramaters become better.
