I just got a new pbass, I don't think I should have based on my readings, but whatever. The manager at Petland gave it to me with a discount so I'm happy.

Well I happen to have a used filter cartridge from a whisper filter until I got my impellers for the penguin 150. I'm thinking about tearing the thing on the outside and just putting the charcoal in. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

So benzjamin13, how do I get them on pellets? I don't really like feeding them bloodworms. I have tried numerous times on different fish, but none have ever ate it. But, I wouldn't mind feeding them the worms that you find at the bait store, the kind from the grouind.

I do a 20-30% water change every week. Is this enough? I might jump on a 55 gallon kit from Petland, and just take what I want, let them keep the rest and give me store credit.

Just don't feed them for a few day and then drop in some pellets. It takes some starving. Don't be discourage if they don't go for them right off the bat. That's strange about the frozen bloodworms...none of my fish have ever refused those. Maybe if you want to try those as well using the starving method. Get them on variety is the best thing you can do.

dont starve them if they aint over 8 inches. ;)

That's exactly why I can't convert them. The only time I will starve a fish when it's small, is if I have already fed them and then go get another fish from a store. Unless that fish ate at the store, its not gonna get food until the next day.

I think the pbass must have just been setting in because today they haven't been hiding at all, even when I put the new pbass in the tank. :headbang2

Does anyone know what I should do about the water quality? Also, how should I go about getting their colors to brighten up?:irked:

theres plenty of ways to get cichla off live over 8 inches.
starving them when young just makes them weak and can kill them.

I would not do that with the carbon. First off it won't help with the Ammonia, which you need to spike and then flat line anyway. And secondly if its not fresh it can and will leach anything that it may have absorbed back into your water making it worse. About the best thing you can do is frequent small water changes so that your tank still cycles but the roller coaster effect won't be as harsh on your fish. You basically need to try and minimize the trauma of a cycling tank without interfering with the cycle too much.

Anyone, anything? It seems like the three of them are doing alright, I just fed them and they jumped on it like crazy. I'm going to do a water test in a while, I am wondering if there are any improvements.

I was able to convert Pbass at 4" Mine learned in a few days to eat pellets.

Unfortunately, the water quality didn't improve by much, here are the parameters:

Temp. - 86 degrees
PH - Around 7.0 to 7.2, I wasn't exactly sure.
Ammonia - 8.0
Nitrate - 10
Nitrite - 0.50

Does anyone have ideas?

How did you go about doing this? I will try anything but the starving method.

Simply put, they just cost too much for me to take any chances. I would rather lose them to a freak of nature, than by starvation.
