Explain to me why Pythons shouldn't be banned?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am 100% against this proposed bill...

Think about this though...

Is the government screwing us or is it us (the reptile community as a whole) that has screwed ourselves???

There would be no need for this bill if reptile keepers and breeders were more responsible...
How many times have you heard about some small child or even an adult getting killed by a burm??? Even if was only once, it is one too many...
How many times have you been at a reptile show and seen some little kid walking around with a baby burm, retic, or boa in a deli cup???
How many snakes needed to be let go in the Everglades in order for the burm poulation to be at the point it is now???

If you ask me, this is something the herp community has been inadvertently asking for, for a LONG time... I do not believe a ban will rectify the issues but I do think permit systems should be adopted...

If you think about it, less people are killed or injured by captive venomous snakes and no exotic venomous have populated in the US... There have been no bills written to ban them... I think this is mostly because it is a small, close knit group of keepers and in most states you need to be 18 years old and have a permit to keep them...

I think if permit systems were put in place a long time ago, we may not be having to deal with this problem now...

Florida (and in Turn Hawaii) are the exceptions simply due to our climate. We have populations of countless exotic fish, birds, monkey's, Reptiles, well...you name it. Ironically, while irresponsible owners are definitely a contributing factor to these populations, they are not the only factor.

After hurricane Andrew there were dozens of exotic parrots, and misc birds, as well as primates and reptiles loose. I have a friend who caught a few dozen yellow head Amazon Parrots off his Mango tree that had rings on their legs from a local attraction.

In the early import days, a lot of smuggled animals were released at the airports )by the smugglers) if the importer was in danger of being inspected/caught. Hence our 'wild' macaws and monkeys.

These are not the usual though...How many of us know of Current Illegal or restricted animals being kept. Or illegal drug use, or illegal car alterations. List goes on. Banning won't solve the problem, people will always get around the law if its something they really want. In turn it may simply make the allure of keeping such an animal even more appealing. What they need to do, is as mentioned, ENFORCE the current laws.

BTW, to answer your question. They should not be banned because it wont solve the problem.

I can train my german shepard to obey me and attack or do tricks on command. Can you do that with your snakes?
your trying to compare snakes to dogs. Ok you can train your dog, the same guy who would train his snake if he could is also the guy who is smart enough not to let it go or let you know its even in existence. The other person who trains thier dog, such as me,with my PIT BULL, who is great with everyone, may just bite someone if it was running loose over night after a fence blew down or something. I know what you are trying to say,but think about it a little more please.

we should ban them because im closed minded and think anything i dont particularly care for should be banned..
excuse me i have to go beat up some smokers now.

not trying to be a , but this is basically what it comes down to. there are so many things in life to ban that bring people a little bit of joy. if you ban them all you will be left with only public transportation, tasteless paste to eat, and regemented exercise and learning. basically jail.

Intersting replies, thank you.

Let me ask this though: What is best for the animals?

I worked in the pet industry during the bird ban and you know what? The law helped, not harmed, the birds in question.
Before you assume i'm for banning reptiles i'm not, but I wonder if all of the people "Outraged" by a gov't proposal to ban snakes that get quite large are truly thinking of the well being of these animals. Or just themselves.;)

How is that relevant to this discussion?

The behavior and temperment of snakes can depend greatly on the species, but just like most other animals-including your German shepherd-it also depends greatly on how they are treated. If mistreated, both a dog and a snake can become abnormally aggressive and dangerous. Does this mean no one should be able to own either?

I actually own a few cornsnakes, i just dont see the point of wanting a 14ft, 125lb python, or larger. A guyi used to work with had a 13 ft anaconda that he fed goats. Seriously, why? I think he had a serious case of little man syndrome. I guess owning a "big bad snake" makes some men feel more like a man. I just dont quite get it.

^ To each their own. That's why we don't all drive the same car. People have different tastes. Should we take away that freedom too?

Just FYI. I don't own any snakes and would never want a large constrictor. It's just not my thing but I wouldn't want to take away that freedom to own one from everyone. But I do agree that some people out there shouldn't be allowed to keep them.
