Exploding MarineLand Heaters!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Controllers work for the opposite end of the heater dilemma. They serve the same purpose as the thermostat in a regular heater, but with much more reliability. Normal heaters have a metal thermostat that has a tendency to wear simply because of how it works.... expansion and contraction based on heat. The temp controller are digital and basically regulate the AC power supplied. If one of your heaters were to get stuck on, it wouldn't matter as the controller will shut it off as the temp reaches the appropriate setting. Most fish can do OK if a heater quits, but not if they are cooked.

exploding heaters. dude, that really sucks.

and i is like really, really weird.

get eheim jagers and be done with it. i have one 3 years old now and it is still running just fine.

eheim for the win!

Wahahaha, the orginal stealth cooked fish and the new stealth pro explodes.

Marineland heaters = extreme fish keeping.

You never know when your tank is going to explode with stealth.

That really sucks, now your fish are shell shocked.

I use Visi-therm heaters in all of my tanks (6 currently set up, 2 waiting to be set up) and have been running them for several years, and have yet to have a heater die, fizz out, electrocute me, cook a tank, or anything else.

I think its just more of a luck of the draw on heater lots. There are going to be some from every brand that fail. It could be something as simple as a dock loader dropped a box of them on a concrete floor, and that box of heaters go on to fail in 6 months, or something like that.

Thanks for the heads up.

I use Rena and Eheim heaters - the former because it attaches to your canister intake, and the latter because, well, Eheim rocks.

Does anyone make good, reliable heaters anymore?

All the good brands of the past are now suspect due to company mergers and cost cutting.

I just tried a Fluval M300 to see if they are any good; NOT.

It took awhile for me to notice, but the heater constantly cycles ON and OFF. The heater turns on for ~ 45 seconds and then stays off for a minute. Unfortunately that short ON time doesn't raise the temperature enough. After a month, the tank temperature has yet to reach the target 78. I tried it horizontally and had a water pump pushing fast current by it; but it never changes the cycle time.

I was impressed when I read Fluval's test procedures and how the thermostat has been tested up to one million on/off switches. Heck, I'll reach a million cycles in less than two years with my current ON/OFF cycle time frame.

BTW - This 300W replaced a 200W that had no trouble maintaining 78.

What about Hydor ? I have many of these and haven't had any problems (and they're cheaper than Marineland and Fluval [made in Italy]).

Hydor also makes "in-line" heaters than you can put on the outake/intake of your canister filter.

THEY ALSO, make air pumps that you can put in your tank!!! Very cool and very QUIET (my brother has 2 of these, very cool!)

BTW: I have an Eheim, Ebo-Jager (newer model) and I've read they are not fully submersible. I have the "head" of the heater above the water line, and it still has some water droplets in the heater area. I also have an older Jager (non-Eheim) and the thermostat blew on it (but it's old, so it still gets my thumbs up).

Good luck, sucks to hear about your exploding heaters. Sounds like Fish fireworks. :nilly:

The Ebo Jager is fully submersible, it saids right on the heater. IMO top heaters would be Rena smart heaters, ebo Jagers and Fluval even though VFC thinks differently.

Nothing but bad experiences with stealths (Ive made a few threads about this) All my tanks use Ebo Jager effectively now without issue.
