Exploding MarineLand Heaters!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
any updates on this issue?

i have lot# 01J31, does anyone know if that is a bad batch? just to be safe, i disconnected mine last night. after inspecting it; its built pretty well and i cant imagine its exploding. i would have to agree with whom ever said that the top would pop before exploding. the top is the weakest point.

oh forgot to mention, is this a april fools joke?? just asking to make sure!!

No, not a joke. I heard my brand new 300w Stealth sizzling and making all sorts of noise before it died. It didn't explode but something was going on inside it because it made no heat and was leaking a lot of stray voltage into the tank.

The stray voltage was an issue with my 300 that went out after a month. Couldn't even put my hand in when it was plugged in. It would shock the hell out of you.

Not that I follow them but I think that is why they all have safety guidelines telling you to unplug all electrical devices before putting your hand in the tank.

RE: ebo jager submersible issue.

for years, as mentioned, they were required by law to put a water line on them in north american in order to receive CSA and UL approval canada and the states respectively, even though the heaters were identical to the submersible ones sold in europe.

I posted a thread a while back about how the new Ebo's at my LFS have a sticker on the packages stating 'new safety cord' etc. which means that they now HAVE the approval WITHOUT having to put a water line on them.

so the new lineup should not have a water line printed on them if they have these new modifications in North America.

for the europe model's, probably nothing has changed.

found my stealth pro this morning with a split down the middle. was making a sizzling noise but still heating. good thing i only used 1 of the 2 that i have. id rather keep using my cheapo jebo's, atleast they're glass and completely sealed. number on the stealth is 01J31, so its not just the ones the OP posted.

seems like 01J31 is a bad lot also

Maybe they're all bad lots, and it's just a badly designed heater?

Aquarium heaters are the biggest pain in the ass. It's the only part in the aquarium that can simply kill all your fish within a day if it fails, and it is hard to tell which ones are truly reliable. Sure, everyone and their dog on this forum will recommend an ebo jager, except ebo jagers have changed since 15 years ago, and I've heard a couple people say they've failed.

Obviously any heater CAN fail, but it is very hard to find out which one is least likely to fail.

talk to marineland this morning and they said there is no recall of any heaters.

i mention that there is alot of talk about the pro heaters exploding and they said the are unaware of any cases. if they did get complaints, i doubt they will inform me. they just told me to folow the instructions and if i have any problems to contact them.

so what to do now? my heater has been working fine with no issues.
